Members,

Do you sometimes feel a strong urge to drink? This craving may come our of the blue or it may appear predictably, in a certain location or situation. As cravings often feel like anxiety, you may crave when you get anxious. This can also happen when you are bored, stressed or angry.

Here’s a list of some alternatives to having that drink:

1 – Delay: Rather than drink immediately when the urge hits, delay your drinking for as long as you can. Sometimes when you do this, the urge to drink will pass.

2 – Distraction: Cravings can partly be attributed to your focus and if your thinking of alcohol then you are likely going to start to crave. If you change these thoughts you wil stop craving. The best way to change your these thoughts is to distract yourself with something. Choose an activity that you enjoy and that is easy to do without much preparation or stress. You could practise some relaxation techniques (stretching, deep breathing), physical activity, cooking or whatever else floats your boat.
