Welcome Goose.  Glad to have you with us.  It does seem like an enormous, near-impossible task, doesn't it?  But Vincenza is right.  Set small goals, take it one day at a time, and you can do it.  Let us help you with advice and cheerleading.  Be kind to yourself.  A few things that work for me:  Being mindful of triggers.  One of mine is anything having to do with my ex.  I drank to anesthetize myself.  So now, when my ex appears, I'm know I'm going to have the urge to drink and I'm ready for it.  Another tool I picked up here is to tell myself to wait when I get the urge to drink.  In fifteen minutes or less, it tends to pass.

Hi Goose,

Welcome!  You have found a very supportive group of people that are here to help one another overcome dependency and addiction to alcohol.
It sounds like you are in a challenging environment in terms of eliminating triggers.
Why does the 12-step program frighten you?  Have you tried limiting or abstaining from alcohol in the past?  If so, what worked for you?  What did not?

Spend time reading through various threads on this forum as well as the information and tips available on this site.  Set daily goals for yourself and take it one day at a time.  Post often to let us know how you're doing.

Hi All and Happy New Year,

Great time to try to control the drinking after a week of debauchery.  Part of my wine consumption is triggered by addictive tendencies and part is driven by codependency.  My husband is a chronic, less than functioning drinker and much of our relationship is based on this commonality.  I am well aware of how our drinking has intruded on our financial issues and parenting skills.  But how to stop?  Such an enormous goal.  So many issues.  The 12-Step Program frightens me and I have no desire to give myself over to a higher power.  My motivation must be internally driven.

Any suggestions?  Al-Anon?
