Thats a good question. The question is are you able to do that consistently? And not pick up a drink after a prolonged absence?  And once you take that first drink, are you going out of control? The term craving used by Alcoholics is, after math of we take the first drink? Can we go without the 2nd drink consistently?

And after a prolonged absence, the thought we can handle liquor normally is what AA calls it obsession of the mind. Where it tricks the person into believing he is a normal drinker.

Still trying to determine what a true alcoholic is. When I make a decision not to drink I usually abide by it and take a drink only after I have done everthing else or sometimes there is nothing around to drink or everything is closed so I accept that and don't go crazy without a drink..I wonder then ..Am I an alcoholic?

Alcoholics drink no matter what.

Here is a line from the book called Alcoholics Anonymous:

If, when you honestly want to, you find you cannot quit entirely, or if when drinking, you have little control over the amount you take, you are probably alcoholic. If that be the case, you may be suffering from an illness which only a spiritual experience will conquer.
