Hi David, I'mk ind of in the same boat as you...the holidays ewre really hard....my cutting back plan did not work so much for me...the only time I did not drink (which I can proudly say!!!) is when I waas the DD....that worked, it forced me to not drink, but cuttinb back isn't really working...i think I just have to do it cold turkey,a s in no more drinks!

It is so true how you feel about yourself when you dont' drink...accomplished, more self confident, mor beautiful i nside and out! I need to get more motivated....perhaps I should just get rid of all aclohol in my house thsi way temptation is not there...what do you all think???

David, welcome back!

The holidays can be a challenging time when you want to stop drinking.

You asked yourself why you can't stop drinking. That is a good question to focus on and try to answer for yourself as it may help you break this cycle. You mentioned that you stop for a few weeks, then one evening decide to have a few drinks to relax and that starts the cycle again. Maybe you can think of ways to stay motivated and not drink  even when you want to after a few weeks. Remind yourself of how much more you like the person you are when you do not drink.

You seem motivated to go back to stopping (you mentioned you felt and looked better during those times). Use this as a motivator to continue on this path.

In regards to drugs, the only one I know of is Antabuse. You take it before you start drinking, and it causes you to feel sick. You then associate feeling sick with drinking, and you do not want to drink anymore. Although it may be embarrassing, I do suggest asking your doctor. What do you have to loose? A doctor is there to help you deal with health problems, they are trained to be non judgmental and helpful.

Members, do you ave any experiences with talking to your doctor about using drugs for dealing with drinking? Please share your experiences with us.

So, after a very rocky, and up and down holiday season I am back here desperate to beat this bad addiction. I feel kind of helpless often and I know it has become a problem for me. When I don't drink I become a different person, and I like this person that I become. Even if I don't drink for a few days I feel more positive about things. When I drink the day after I can feel this horrible sense of depression and despondency come over me.

Why can't I stop drinking? Even if I stop for a few weeks I will one evening decide that it would be nice to have a few drinks to relax a bit - and we all know that a few drinks is never enough. So this starts the whole cycle over again and I drink again the next night, and the night after that, and so on, until I just can't take it any longer and decide to stop drinking once again.

I've often wondered if there are drugs to prevent people from drinking, but am too embarrassed to ask my doctor - or anyone else for that matter. Does anyone here know about such drugs? Are they available?

I have quit before for very long periods of time and I know how great I felt - and looked during those times. I want these times back so badly.

I need to get back to those times.

I need to regain this power to stop.

Thanks for reading.

Hello David!
Well, this is a small pretty tight knit community. You'll notice that we're not judgemental and ready to listen since many of us are going through the same things. You can definiely share anything you wish with us (it may just take a while for somone to get back, I know for me at least, with the Holidays coming up, it's been a bit tough to get some computer time).

But I really do look forward to getting to know you better...and to see how you are doing, what is working what isn't working :)

Hi, Luciana, and leanne.

Thank you both for your replies.

I guess I should be doing more to actually look through the program itself here, but to be honest I really only just joined yesterday, and was a bit disappointed with the response I got here after joining.

I understand that it may very well be an individual type program here, but I was expecting more of a "community" with which I might share my travels in this quest to become alcohol-free.. That's all.

Thanks.

Hello, I'm on here right now, just updated my blog. It's kind of a neat way to keep track of what has been happening, I like the fact that it's onlne and private to this website, so no one wlil stumble upon it accidentally...you should think about starting your own (There's a Launch blog feature, right above the actual forums, on the Forums page!)

I'm planning to look through some parts of the program today (well in the next 30 min or so), more specifically the Triggers part.

Hi David, there is usually someone lurking in the background and usually the more you post, the more people will be inclined to reply.

Also, have you had a chance to look through the program itself? The forums are an important part of the social support aspect of this website, but the program in itself has a lot of useful information which can guide you on your journey.

Let us know how you are doing and if there is anything you need support with.

I am so confused. There sems to be no one here. How can a service such as this operate with no - or little activity?

Just wondering...

Hi, Ray-Ray.

Thanks so much for the reply. Being here at this site, on my first steps to becoming alcohol-free means so much to me. I just hope I can do it - I truly want, and need to do this.

Thanks.

Hi David!

Welcome to this site! This place is AWESOME!!!!! I joined a few months back and have really benefited from working the program, reading posts, posting and just feeling like I have a place to come and ask anything. You will receive support, no matter what! Since being a member here, I learned that we are all different and we work on our goals differently. For me, I decided to cut alcohol out completely. I had made some majorly brutal mistakes and almost lost my boyfriend, friends and even family members were slipping away from me. I had tried to cut down before and finally hit rock bottom. I decided that enough was enough, I'm young and I needed a change. It was hard at first, no one really took me seriously. But I knew that if I stuck with it I would prove to them that I was for real this time. In the beginning, the temptation was really strong. All my friends love to do is party and drink. I chose to skip a few parties and then i decided I would attend but just drink soda or juice instead. I was also embarassed to tell people that I quit. But like my boyfriend says, who cares about other people! And, I've also shaped up since quitting alcohol, i'm working out and in really good shape!

Anyway, i just wanted to share my story with you so you can see that we are all in this together. Our situations might be very different, but all said in done we are all avoiding alcohol and if we can help each other out then let's do it!

Again, welcome and check in soon!

Ray-Ray
