Thanks for the information. You know. I am starting to discover, that a lot of people just don't care to drink at all. Particularly baby-boomers in their 40's and 50's that have given up drinking altogether. It's not such a big problem as rich stated.
Hey Guys - Perrier is a great substitute as well. Its fizzy has a bit of a different taste. - Add a squeeze of lemon and your good to go!
Its what I usually use at social functions. In time you might find like I did and realize that the only one that views you not drinking in a different light is yourself. Honestly most of the time no one notices.
Keep up the great work guys, just be wary of the voice that try's to tell you it'll be different this time.
Hello everyone, just wanted to say thanks for everyone's comments and suggestions which I have found really helpful and inspiring. This website has played a huge role in helping me quit drinking, for the first time in my life I'm more confident it will stick - almost 3 weeks without a drink now - its been tough but worth every second of it. I have found drinking plain soda water with ice helps for some reason, its a great substitute and it helps get me over my habit of wanting to reach for something to drink when I'm out with friends. I drink tons of it now with no hangover or guilt
Hey Rich, thanks for the advice. I used the non-alcoholic beer as away of socializing with my friends and tyring not seems so out of place with them. I only drank two of them and it does begin to give me the illusion of being able to handle the real thing again. I think I will re frame from drinking them too, on a regular basis.
I will try to only substitute with them during holiday events and special occasions where it would be more appropriate to make others feel comfortable with their drinking habits.
No non-alcoholic beer doesn't count as a drink but remember that any amount of alcohol can trigger some of us and even the taste of it can make us want the real thing. That said I did use non-alcoholic beer for some time, but ended up stopping because it made everyone around me really uncomfortable and I also got tired of justifying it. I generally drank Becks because it was 0.00% instead of the usual 0.05 that you tend to find.
Looking back I thought it helped me with my cravings but really I think I dwelled and romantised about the real thing alot more.
Do what you think is best but please be cautious and honest with yourself.
Yeah guys, I have a question? Does non-alcoholic beer count as having a drink. This past weekend my wife and I joined our neighbors cookout and I decide to brink non-alcoholic beer for myself. I only had two beers but, the next day I woke up with a small hangover. The bottle said the beer contained 0.05 alcohol. Should I count these as drinks in my diary?
Well Foxman I think I understand what you are saying but I and I think many of my friends will disagree. A very close friend of mine was so bad when he came into the program that he was injecting alcohol into his eyes. He just celebrated 35 years recently. Meeting don't work for everyone, but not everyone follows all the suggested steps either. Those I have seen in my short couple years in my 12 step program that keep working at the steps and keep going to meetings on't drink - those that stop going frequently go back to drinking.
