Yes indeed, when success comes from addiction, it is done in through and by an an enhanced sense of gratitude.  At least that is how it is with me.  I want to think about the "perilous solitude" and its connection to the numinous for a while.  It is a concept, very near to me, and I want to be able to express it properly...I'll just have a think on it and continue the conversation from there...In the meantime...

nonic, I was trying to figure out what you meant in the last post. So I googled the words "perilous solitude" and got this:

Solitude gives birth to the original in us, to beauty unfamiliar and perilous- to poetry. But also, it gives birth to the opposite: to the perverse, the illicit, the absurd.

I'm not sure if that's exactly what you meant, but that quote sure stimulated some more thinking by me about this whole smoking and quitting thing. ...Basically , the potential for both horror and great beauty that lies within us. I'm feeling that being freed of our long-time self-imposed chains of addiction maybe gives us a greater gratitude for the beauty in life that smoking may have concealed for all those years.

Thanks again for your posts.

Thank you for the very kind compliment.  I dearly love words.  The best use of them is to paint pictures.  They are to my way of thinking the best representation we have for describing the things that are going on in our internal worlds.

Here is a word that you might find interesting.  The word is numinous and it references the sense of awe that we feel when we react to "perilous solitude".  It is a kin to the ancient fear of the forest, but holds a much deeper and poignant description of awe.  It's hard to describe, but we know it when we feel it...

"Oh yes, I too lived a long time in the dark looking for the light switch.  Round and round I would go.  I tell you truly had I not found this site and all of the kind souls who make it the place it is, I would have despaired of ever bidding fare well to this particular addiction...But here we are and that's a very good thing..."

Something about the way you say things both soothes and tickles my soul.

Thank you so much for your note here.  That story about the bad and good wolf, I believe, is a native American story.   It has stuck with me for a long time because it has that ring of truth that gives certain things solidity in the mind.  We really do have a choice in most matters.  For a great long time, I forgot that...Addiction, although it feels like an absolute when one is there, is truly a choice.

A belated congratulations Nonic.  An extremely well desrved renomination!  Your words are not only poetic but inspirational.  I thoroughly enjoyed your bad and good wolf analogy. I certainly fed the bad wolf for much too long with my many addictions due to a lack of knowledge and desire to cope with life in a healthier and more rewarding manner.  There definitely is a brighter and more promising world beyond the walled in world of negativity that addiction creates.  Your words paint a colorful picture of that brighter world.  Thank you!
