To me, smoking is a very deliberate act; there a lot of built in points in which to stop yourself if you choose to.
You have to actively GO to a store to buy them which involves standing in line and pulling out your wallet, getting out money, having an exchange with the cashier. At any time you can say (or scream) "NO" and turn away. Sure you may look like a freak doing that outloud or suddenly changing your mind but who cares. Then if you still go through with the purchase you have to open the pack, pull out the smoke, put it to your mug and fumble with a lighting utensil. Each of these steps offer a way out if you remain conscience of what you are doing. Even if you smoke one, you still have the rest of the pack staring at you.
All that to say, I played out that scenario MANY times my first two weeks. I knew that if I had a pack in my hands I would smoke the whole thing. Then I'd buy another and be right back to square one. For me it would never be just one or just a drag - if I bought 20 then I would smoke 20.
It seems to have worked ;p Great topic Rusty.
