Thank you for your advice.  It is good to hear from others who are/have been in the same position - cos I am so fed up with my non smoker people telling me 'you can do it' ... 'it's not that hard ... just don't smoke'  These folks obviously like to live life on the edge ... it is NOT a good idea to over simplify the issue to a pre-menstrual Scots woman who is three days into trying to give up smoking!!!  But cheers to you ... I enjoyed reading your posts, it is nice to know that I am not really alone (even if it does feel like that) and if nothing else ... you stopped me from smoking tonight ... and tomorrow is another day ... Oh Super!! Cant wait for that then ... another 24 hours of mental and physical tug o' war with the army of cakes, sweeties and crisps stomping toward me laden with their weapons of comfort and calories ... brilliant ... soon I am not just gonna be depressed and angry ... I am gonna be a very large pre-menstrually depressed Scots woman who's overwhelming anger has been fuelled by her constant sugar rush!!

  Welcome to the community and congratulations on deciding to kick the habit!

 

We strongly encourage you to prepare for your quit using the program. Quitting smoking is not only a habit, it's an addiction. This program is going to help you plan how to deal with cravings and more importantly teach you how to replace this old habit with a new one.

 

You'll also need to put into place a reward system. It should have three components: small one for after each craving, medium for the end of each smoke-free day and a bigger one for the end of each smoke-free week.

 

Start reading through the forums, you'll quickly realize that many have felt just as you do now and they are now non-smokers. You'll also be able to find a lot of tips and tricks to help you along the way.

 

You have received a lot of great advice from other members. Continue to post and keep us updated on how you are doing!

Hell week is just that...hell.  The anger is bad, so is the depression.  As Karren said...it gets better...more than better if you can hang on.  I started feeling less depressed/anxious after about 10 days, but it really does vary for everyone.  It didn't all go away after 10 days and I did have some moments further down the road that felt as bad as hell week, but it will become more manageable soon.  The cravings get shorter and farther apart.  Just be sure to have all of your tools in place so you aren't tempted to give in to the cravings.  Water, walks, gum, candy, go to bed early, whatever helps you stay smoke free and relax.  Of course, come here as often as you need...we're all here to help!

Hello FAL, welcome to the SSC, you've come to the right place for everything really. We'll tell you the truth, theres no point hiding it, but we'll also tell you how utterly fantastic it is to have got through those early days and are now living free, free from smoking, free from having to find somewhere to smoke, free from smelling, free to spend our money on rewards!
The first two weeks on here we call Hell week and Heck week- Hell week is what it says on the tin, it is darn hard work, the whole world is thrown upside down and our every waking hour is filled with thinking about smoking- everywhere you look you'll see smokers-everywhere!! The thing is you're an addict, and the addiction doesn't want to let you go, its going to make it real hard to ignore, and of course the easiest thing is to give in and have a cig, but then, look long term, in fact look at one of our members videos (Kylisa) if that doesn't make you stop smoking then nothing will.
You have kids?? I rest my case, thats your future.
Everything you have felt these last few days is 'normal' and exactly what most of us on here have felt- but FAL it does get better, not tolerable,, and better than better, its like being re born- honestly it is- Listen I smoked 30 a day for 37 years- this is my first quit (Never thought I could so never tried) now I just wished to God I had done it years ago, you have ten years on my smoking time, quit now- and get all the help you can- are you from the uK like me?? use the NHS, I did, I had a wonderful smoking clinic nurse at my doctors, prescriptions for patches and gum, and counselling any time I wanted it. Combined with my determination, and the fantastic people you will meet on here who will be 100% behind you all the way in good times and in bad, I did it, just take a look at my stats.
Sorry to ramble, but I really do take the attitude if I can do it, then anyone can if they want it, so come on, come on board and lets do this together.

I am new to this site but I have been using it as a bit of life line to stop me reaching for the smokes.  I have never went this long without a cigarette in 27 years but to be honest ... it's awful.  If I had thought that I would feel this bloody lousy then maybe I wouldn't have bothered ... my body feels under siege, my mind is consumed with thoughts of smoking and I am more than a little angry and depressed ... and trust me when I tell you that I did not need any help with either of those.  I have shouted (okay! screamed) at the kids, shouted at the radio?? developed road rage, beat a few house hold objects to death and it feels like I have lost all the joy in my life. When does this get better? and I don't mean tolerable ... I mean BETTER. If anyone is out there who is willing to tell me the truth (I don't do softly, softly) please give me the gory details of what awaits me and remind of why the hell this suffering is going to be worth it.  Today I am VERY desperate.
