Great! This will give you time to also practice delaying your next cigarette and start playing around with a variety of options to help you push through those craves during your delaying. A great exercise to help you get ready for your quit!
You can find more information about this preparation exercises in your program.
Steve, good luck with your op- I think you made the right choice to go ahead, yes it will be painful at the start but you must have been long term suffering for them to offer you such a serious operation, and just think once you've fully recovered-hopefully all that will be gone.
As for your quit date, well its great you're cutting down, it does help (helped me) and also to set your date after your vacation sounds sensible too.
Keep us posted wont you?

OK, so I met with the surgeon and he showed me exactly what they will be doing to my back. They will remove the herniated part of two discs and then install screws and bars to tie three vertebrae together. He kept saying how serious and painful an operation it is.
I'm going through with it though, I am cutting back on the smoking but I think I may postpone the actual quit day until I'm back from vacation.
I have had two back operations... two discoidectomies and my recovery times were well within the norms for my age and the fact that I was a smoker (1977 & 1985) but I did have trouble with my post-operative lung clearance after both... I had to stay on oxygen and the breathing exerciser apparatus much longer than others in the ward who were not smokers...Also, I was made to get up out of bed within 24 hours of theatre and the fact that I was gasping for breath somehow didn't fizz on me when I could see other patients walking the corridors a day after their's and they weren't hanging on to their IV poles like I was...
Yes, I took Champix for the first 8 Days and then quit smoking. Then for another two weeks - right up to the point where I forgot to take one of the pills and found that I was doing okay without it! I stopped altogether after about 15/16 days post quit and noticed not a lot of extra cravings or irritability: I was so committed to the quit and the SSC members that I couldn't afford to lose my focus on the quit-journey...
You'll do fine, Steve. I think that your clean lungs and that concentration you are now acquiring will get you through the recuperation time a lot faster than the estimates you laid out earlier....

HI STEVE, good luck hope you stay strong. I just wanted to let you know that I too just tried to quit using champex. I know I tried for the wrong reasons, my kids not me. I also was talking to the respitory therapist and she mentioned that I should have waited till days 12-14 to quit so that it has a chance to really build in your system. (i quit day 8)
(as you probably guessed I messed up but will be starting again soon with the patch)
She also told me that the sick feeling was probably caused from withdrals not the meds?
Thank you to all for the encouragment and support on the site, it helps to talk to people who are going or went through this already. non smokers don't get it.
good luck steve

I'm a long time smoker too. My last quit was over six years ago using the patch and this site. I used Chantix this quit and was amazed how well it worked for me. Hope it is the same for you!
