I just read Bubba's story. Thanks for pointing it out to me. I can't believe that you, Misty were going thru all that when you were quitting, that's amazing and encouraging. Thanks for sharing all your tips and encouragement with me after all, my quit date is a day and one half away, or maybe sooner :8o: My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/7/2008 Smoke-Free Days: -1 Cigarettes Not Smoked: -15 Amount Saved: $-5.70 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: -2810

You know - you'll gain weight. Even if you didn't have 'food issues" (so do I) you'd still expect to gain some weight. Thing is - it's easier to overcome the food thing oand once you've quit smoking, you'll be able to take what you've learned about commitment for yourself to the next venue of your life. I just jined weight watchers and have commitet myself to staying strong in it. It's been almost a year and a half since i've smoked. I was a 4 pack a day smoker for 22 years and quit cold turkey. I went through menopause at the same time as my quit and didn't know it wasn't the quit making me feel like that. i am diabetic and take several meds and insulin and my blood sugars were all over the place. You want to quit. If you didn't, you wouldn't have found this place. Keep with your commitment to take care of yourself and let them go. Use these boards as distractions, reward yourself well and several times per day at first, and drink lots and lots and lots and lots of ice water. Welcome and congratulations on our decision to be free! Hi den, I just brought up, or bumped, a post about a man named Lindsey. His SSC name was Bubba and his is quite the underdog story for quitters Be Encouraged by Bubba's Story. Truly, if he could stay quit - anyone can! You've gotten great advice. Try to get excited about your new life. Spend these last days as a smoker seeing cigarettes for what they really are. As the smoke gets in your eyes, on your clothes, in your hair think of all the things you hate about smoking. Most of them will be gone within the first few days! Put together a list of why you want to quit and the benefits you are looking forward to. It helps solidify things when they are in writing. Read all you can here and other sites, the more prepared you feel the more excited you'll get. We all got where we are one day, one minute and one cigarette at a time and so can you :) All the best My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/5/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 1248 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 24,960 Amount Saved: $5,616.00 Life Gained: Days: 97 Hrs: 7 Mins: 3 Seconds: 42

Hi Den and Welcome. I, too was doomed when I took the tests. But what I tried to do with that was to treat it like a school project and learn, learn, and then learn some more. For me, what Lainey said was the heart of it. You have to want it. You just may be one of the lucky ones who doesn't have a real tough time of it, but if you do have a tough time, seek advice and input from those here whose words and experience you connect with. Just about when you think no one could possibly understand how emotionally difficult this can be, post your feelings and you will have an experienced brigade to guide you through. Good Luck to you Den. HOLY! i woke up to a ton of posts here!! Thank you all so much for your suggestions and support. It really helps me out. As you know my quit date is Monday Jan.07/08 or if i run out of cigarettes, whichever comes first. It's good for me to hear that people also did the test and were told that their chances of quitting were low and yet you did quit. That is comforting. And Tresa your are right, i can lose the weight but not emphysema, i just need to get that into my head. I am both scared and excited about quitting. Knowing i will have all this info and support here really does help me out. thanks again!!!!! :8o: :gasp: My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/7/2008 Smoke-Free Days: -1 Cigarettes Not Smoked: -15 Amount Saved: $-5.70 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: -5177

Hi Den, Welcome to the SSC. If anyone had ever told me I could quit I would have told them they were crazy. The test just about told me I had no chance to make it. I told everyone at work but no one else right away. I told my coworkers only because if the craves hit and I weakened I knew what they would say behind my back and for me that worked. Also like Lainey I didn't tell my hubby and I smoked all over the house and it was almost a week when he started to tell me how I should really quit. Hello where have you been all week. So tell the ones who you think may help your quit the most or just stay quiet and tell no one. I find it great to run into people and tell them I quit when they offer me a smoke. This is not an easy journey but certainly one work taking. Den I came here with much the same attitude.Mine was "why bother I'm 68 ,I enjoy smoking so whats the problem " Well I stayed and as you can see I'm not doing half bad and believe me the benifits of not smoking far out weigh the benifits of smoking. ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/20/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 291 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,238 Amount Saved: $2,910.00 Life Gained: Days: 70 Hrs: 18 Mins: 31 Seconds: 18

Hi Den, and welcome, This is only my fifth smoke-free day this time round, but I'm handling the overeating issue the same way as I did when I last quit successfully for three years. The deal is this: for the first two weeks I get to eat and drink whatever I want to. After that it's a strict food-combining diet until my weight gets back to what I want it to be. Last time, it took me about a month to lose the extra weight I'd put on during the worst two weeks, and another two months to get down to what I reckoned was my ideal weight. Good luck!
