New me, I really am sorry you're having a hard time and if there was some other way to help you, I would. But I only know the telling the truth way. If this is really not helpful to you,please ignore me or even tell me to shut up. This is about you, not me, and either reaction would not hurt my felings. You say the gum is not a coping strategy, but something that keeps you from smoking. New me, that is the very definition of coping strategy. It is a way to get through a situation without smoking. I understand the edge of the abyss, I have been there, and it has taken everything I have to put all my strategies to work, including posting here & waiting for replies, to keep from smoking or getting back on the nicotine roller coaster. It is not easy, I get stressed out, I have teenage kids, I have a demanding job. Others here have lost jobs and family members and dealt with devastating illnesses and accidents among those they love. We don't only do easy things here, new me. That's why we all need each other's help & support to get through it. You can give up the gum, it will not be easy, but you have already done one really hard thing & are still doing it 142 days later. You can do another hard thing and you know the longer you wait, the harder it will be. Please just do it, new me, just prepare for a couple of days of withdrawal, go back to the beginning of the program here if you have to, know that we are all here for you whenever you need us. We know what it's like and we know you can do it. Hey unhooked, I did not think of the gum as a coping strategy, so much as something that would keep me from smoking. I'll tell you, I was on the edge of the abyss...like your sleep walking trip into the quick store, only, I would have smoked if I had some cigs. It was a horrible week with my son. Believe me, I am disappointed that I went to chewing the gum after being nekid for a month or so, but, I will not quit quitting. i understand what you are saying to me. Sorry, new me, the fact is you won't get "over the hump" until you stop thinking of nic gum as a coping strategy. As long as it remains an option for handling stress, you will be sliding down the side of the hump every time you feel stressed. You're not a failure and every smoke-free day is a success, but if your goal is to be nicotine-free and to live free of addiction, you will not reach it as long as you are still indulfging the addiction. Penquin,sparky and you wonderful bear, thanks so much for your concern. What you and some of the others wrote helped me put this all in perspective. We are addicited to nicotine, I know. Smoking is a much more harmful way to ingest it than the nrt.....the 100's of chemicals, the tar in the lungs, the carbon dioxide. I do not want to feel like a failure because I chew a few pieces of nicotine gum everyday for a while. I'm with Lady, everyday that i do not smoke is a reason to rejoice. It's okay, Lainey..it was just a scary statement to me...like I was doomed or something. I just have not been able to get over the hump. Twice in the last year I have been off of the nrt for over a month, then, bam...something stressful (the first time i went back to smoking for a few months). My confidence gets undermined, I get so afraid that I am going to go back to smoking; I get that panicy feeling for a cigarette. I am making a list of what I am going to use for self talk when I find myself feeling this way in the future. I literally have to calm myself, close my eyes, and regain control. I will make it. I do not want to be a smoker for the rest of my life. Boy, I bet your head is spinning. From the posts I know you want to do the right thing for YOU[/b] I have been going though something like that. Not a lot of stress, mine was complacency. I wanted to smoke so bad. Just a puff or just one. But I know and knew that was not an option. So I looked the word up on complacency and to see how it fit my situation and then I wrote about it and posted it. Seeing a pattern from previous quits is outstanding. I too had several relapses and know my patterns. And complacency is a big one. Children will always be a stressor if you let it. We can love them with all our might. We can tell them over and over what we think. But the biggest gift we can give them is trust. What got me though raising my children was knowing there are a lot of grandparents out there. So the survival rate is pretty darn good. I made it and I am a grandparent. Whatever you choose to do, do it. But don't smoke. You and know how hard it is to start all over again. This is the SSC, that is true. But, isn't the goal to become nicotine free. There is a forum for chewers as well, right? Be careful, new me. It is the nicodemon not the smokodemon. She just wants you using, she doesn't care how. Once she gets you hooked back on the nicotine she will work on the method of getting it to your brain. For ME, the gum was never satisfying enough and I always ended up smoking again.
