OK yesterday I went to my first ever weight loss group meeting. I am only 10 lbs. over my fighting weight but those pounds are located like a spare tire aroung my waist. No longer can wear the zip up jeans and the elastic waist seem to have a hang over too. Counting points sounds so complicated as how add in dab of margerine or cut back a 10 oz catfish or counting 18 wheat crackers. I got some frozen weight watcher foods that say the points. We will see what happens next week. It suure cost more than I thought. Will be looking in thrift and used book stores for more resources . Check this out In a cruel and ironic twist, aspartame may actually cause weight gain. Phenylalanine and aspartic acid, found in aspartame, stimulate the release of insulin. Rapid, strong spikes in insulin remove all glucose from the blood-stream and store it as fat. This can result in hypoglycemia and sugar cravings. Additionally, it has been demonstrated to inhibit carbohydrate induced synthesis of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which signals that the body is satiated. Inhibition of serotonin leads to food cravings, increased carbohydrate consumption and, ultimately, weight gain. In a recent study, a control group switching to an aspartame-free diet resulted in an average weight loss of 19 pounds. You could do it on your own and keep a log. Just follow their point rules. Basically I read that you need to stay away from WHITES. If it is white..it's a no no. So...bread is white...all flour is white...sugar is white...rice is white.. LOL Basically with weight watchers you count points. Most woman can have around 19 to 22 points a day. All foods carry points. You just add the points up. If an apple is 2 points you add it to your total. I have one of their slide rulers that gives you points for foods. I know I can lose some weight by not eating sugar. I eat too much sugar in the form of (you guessed it) Hershey Bars. Also..... not eating after 5pm helps allot. Eat your big meal at lunch and eat very light at dinner. No pop of any kind....not even diet. Read the latest research on nutra sweet and artificial sweetners. It causes weight gain!! It effects body chemistry. I think you may enjoy the challenge of weight watchers. It does work and have seen many that have lost weight on it. mercy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/21/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 256 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,120 Amount Saved: $1,144.32 Life Gained: Days: 33 Hrs: 16 Mins: 19 Seconds: 57

In this journey to break free from nicotine, I have learned so much about myself. One of the biggies is that I HAVE AN ADDICTIVE PERSONALITY. When I quit smoking, I started using food as rewards. Having a better sense of taste didn't help this matter, either. This resulted in a weight gain of about 15 pounds and I was at my all time highest weight. So, now I am having to learn how to deal with stress without stuffing food into my mouth. I new tool that I have added to my coping skills is physical activity. This has been a tremendous help in dealing with stress and becoming healthy. I'd also like to second Rusty's thought that the journey of losing weight is so very much like the journey of being smoke free. The goal is just different. Let us know how you're doing Lady. i did weight watcher's a couple years ago and had much success with it. i lost 60 lbs in about 10 months. it was well worth it and the meetings are a great source of support, much like this site. unfortunately, every time i quit smoking i gained weight and i wasn't disciplined enough to stick with it. its about making a lifestyle change and you already did that with quitting smoking, this can be done too. That is awesome, Janet. You must be incredibly proud! So great to see you. I have heard of Meridia but I don't know anything about it. Hi all, I wanted to take a minute to share my story....I started taking a medication called meridia six months ago and have lost 30 pounds. No side effects....it works on the appetite center in the brain. I also walk and go to the gym but it wasn't helping with weight loss until I started the meds. Now, I will say, I look HOT. Yep, have a couple of men nipping at my heels which is nice at my age (50's). But the real issue is health. I live up two flights of stairs on my own and carry groceries and stuff....so much easier on my back. I predict when it quits being a big money maker for the pharmacuetical companies, it will be sold over the counter like Alli. Just another option to consider. Lady and Rusty, you ROCK. Good to see some old timers. I''m almost 800 days! YESSSSSS NOPE, Janet My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/23/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 798 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 15,960 Amount Saved: $3,990.00 Life Gained: Days: 105 Hrs: 23 Mins: 26 Seconds: 20

Thanks, Lady. That's nice of you to say. I don't mean to sound like I know everything about dieting. When I post, I'm usually saying what is going on in my own life and sharing it for what it might be worth. In any case, I am trying to watch my language as I work this eating plan. I'm trying not to say "I can't have xx or yy." In the grocery store last night, I would catch myself walking down the aisles saying "No, not that", "No, can't have that." In the middle of the store, I switched the words in my head to "What good stuff can I have?" and that helped me to think more clearly with my head instead of my emotions. For instance, I was craving a salty snack and stood in the chips aisle gazing longingly at the crunchy Cheetos. Then I realized that I can have pretzels and there are lots of choices there.`I bought some, but I haven't even opened the package because the craving passed. Diets and eating plans are just guides to give us a route to our goals. We have to choose what works best for US and which fits with our lifestyle. That's why it's a good idea to explore different ones -- Weight Watchers, South Beach, OA, Sugarbusters, Sparkpeople is a very good one that a lot of us use. Mayo Clinic has some great plans, too. Google is your friend!
