Planning & Afraid

Yahh for K!!! Sounds like you got the right stuff to do this! Rusty is right. Whats the worst that can happen if we quit? I've also started walking. Started at a mile, and now walking 1 1/2 miles. Haven't bumped to running yet. LOL! Don't be scared if you can't run for 10 minutes at a time. If you can do 10...great! If you can only do 4...GREAT! Just do it everyday, and before you know it, you'll be running FAR past what you thought you could, and breathing easier all the time. {I know I am already!} Remember, slow and steady. Stay strong!

Welcome Keliza! Everyone is scared to quit. Fear of the unknown, of not knowing WHO you are without being a smoker. Afraid of what to do with all the extra time you have on your hands. And of course, being afraid of going back to smoking. For myself, these fears have stopped me from trying to quit in the past. The actual physical addiction was a concern , but I knew it would not last forever. The mental issue is the hardest part for me right now. I ask myself, How will I reward myself after I do a load of laundry or doing the dishes? How will I handle a situation that causes me stress? How will I deal with "smoke breaks" at work? Well, I am just doing it! Minute by Minute, hour by hour, day by day. Coping by doing the skills I have forced myself to learn. You know what, as time passes it IS getting easier! I know is will get easier for you too. Walking, deep breathing, posting on this site and getting positive feedback from everyone on here. Oh, and drinking lots of water :) Just remember one thing, your life will not end if you stop smoking. Thank you so much. Your replies almost make me cry (what a wuss!) Danno I just read your original post and you inspire me. I've smoked since I was 16 or 17 and will be 50 in a couple of weeks. We can definitely both do this. I've taken up running again (actually run/walking) and am now up to trying (tomorrow) to run 10 minutes at a time. That scares me too because I don't know if I can do it and I sure can't keep doing it if I keep smoking. My quit date is the 17th. I'd planned to quit sooner but...I will take my time and make sure I do it right. And I definitely will be back here. We all felt afraid when we quit or first started planning our quit. That's normal. But the big question is: are you going to let fear control you? It helps to take a very close look at your fear, think about it, focus on it, write about it. What is the worse thing that will happen when you quit? You will feel uncomfortable. You will be pulled in two directions, the junkie telling you to smoke and you not wanting to. You will have to make that decision. But you won't die. You won't kill anyone or yourself. You won't throw up on your boss's shoes. None of these things will happen if you quit. So although you won't feel so wonderful for a little while, wonderful things will begin to happen to you little by little. Within a day or so, you will start noticing things like your breathing, your sense of smell, and your taste. You will start feeling the healing that is taking place. Focus on the good, focus on the positive and you will get through anything that you might be afraid of. Hi! Yep! I know exactly how your feeling. Just the thought of being without a smoke makes me want one. Thats just the addiction talking. I myself have cut my intake down anywhere from 60-80 a day, to less than 20. I've been doing this for a few days now. Next step is to put them down altogether! Freaks me out too. I've been smoking for nearly 35 years. It's part of who I am, and a part of who my friends and family know. BUT...not for long! Keep the strength. I've learned quickly from this site that we are not alone in this, and there are many people here that are ready and waiting to walk with us through this. Reach out, and they WILL be there. Best of luck! Dan

About to take the plunge (again). I have to do this (want to do this) but why the heck does it scare me? Scared of failing (again) I suppose. Also don't want to have to fight it and go through all that again. Jeez, I wish I'd stayed away from those little white devils the last time. But...I WILL do this. Anyone else feel this way before you actually threw that last pack away?
