Irish Take this as an opportunity to get closer to the why, where and what of your smoking. This is not an easy thing that you are doing, BUT IT CAN BE DONE. Now you are in the most intense time of your quit. You have said no to one of the most addictive drugs known and its going to be a bit akward for awhile. You will have to develop coping mechanisms before the craves come. Deep breathing, drinking water, leaving the situation that is causing the desire. Anything that works for you, but you must have these things at the ready...Remember, a crave only lasts about 5 minutes...You will pass through it if you keep this in mind... As you put more and more light between you and the addiction, it will become easier to do this. Eventually you will become so practised at it that the idea of smoking becomes a simple tought that can be easily banished... Get right back up, your honesty at this juncture will serve you well. Steel yourself against the challenge and find the coping mechanisms that work for you...I know this is not easy, I about went off the rails in the early days, but I was committed and remain so today. I would no longer allow a drug to decide what I would and would not do in my life. You can do this too, as long as your desire not to smoke supercedes your desire to smoke. Thats it...Sounds simple, but as you already know there is more to quitting...You must do this from the inside out, this is something that you accomplish from the core of your being...The outward manifestation (the fact of not smoking) is only a faint reflection of the inner battle that you must wage. So take time to think and understand the reasons that you smoke and then tailor a plan to combat that behaviour. You can do this, one day at a time, 1 moment at a time, 1 thought at a time... irish, I'm jumping in late here, can't add to what these wonderfu;l people have already said. But I want to congratulate for getting right back on. You can do it, you will do it & you are doing it, you just have to keep doing it. If something like this happens again, start a new thread in any forum & title it HELP or some other thing that will get attention right away. Someone will be there for you. What I have done is post, then go take a bath right away because I can't go get smokes naked with my hair wet. When I'm done a nice, long, relaxing bath, I come back for responses & my quit buddies have come through for me every time. So glad you're still with us, irish, hang in!! Irish, Quitting smoking is very difficult (obviously) and you are bound to have problems. In all my attempts to quit, one of the things I have learned the most from is to not dwell on a slip. I think for me at least, it was pretty easy to slip and then just give up. I convinced myself I did not have enough will power, I was mad at myself and being mad made me want to smoke, or I decided I was just meant to be a smoker. All of those things prevented me from just picking myself up and staying focused on my quit. Do not be upset with yourself, things like that just sometimes happen. Do not dwell on it because it can become discouraging. I had this conversation with my thirteen year old daughter the other day. She wants to give up on everything that is difficult for her. I tried to explain that if I did that with trying to quit smoking I would never quit. In any difficult situation all we can do is persevere and hope some day the reward for our patience and determination will be great. Forgive youself and keep going. Pity Party away! Lord knows I did! I whined and cried all over these boards. Keep putting one foot in front of the other Irish and don't give up on yourself. If you post and no one answers, post again and again and again. There is usually someone around. You can kick, scream, cry, fight, punch a pillow, go for a walk or break dishes but you CANNOT smoke. Smoking is no longer an option. Chew gum, drink ice water (this really helps), suck on peppermint. Make a list of things you can do instead of smoke and then choose from that list when you think you can't go on. You have made a choice. We all know you are perfectly capable of smoking; however, you choose not to. What a great choice. Remember Life is full of choices. Dump the smokes down the toilet where they belong. This is a fight for your own life. Be strong, stay focused. Start walking, anything to reduce stress. When you feel that feeling in your chest, and long for a smoke, take a deep breath and hold it, and take your mind somewhere else, keep breathing deep until it passes. Meditate, anything to distract your mind. You can do this, if I have come this far, I know you can!! I did come in before I lite up........I waited and waited for a response. I guess maybe because I posted on another thread..(you know, added on to one) ...that I didn't get a reply. I'm not blaming or accusing anyone either, so please don't think that. It was my own fault and I'm owning up to that. Just as it was my own fault I lit up in the first place. Where did I get the cigs??? Like an idiot, I bought a pack. again, no excuse, no reason, just a dumb move on my part. It didn't make me feel any better having had one...it's just made me feel weak. I know addiction is a weakness..but I want to become stronger over it. I pray that I will..........NO!!!! I KNOW I will, just have to keep praying for the strength. I AM NOT giving UP!!! I WILL SUCCEED!!! I want to thank you all for being there for me and not condemning me. (Note I didn't say you condoned what I did, just didn't condemn) I look forward to the day when I can overcome this pity party for me, move on and be as supportive as you all down the road to others who are quitting or trying to quit and say I've been there and have been successful. Irish, Look at the reasons that you smoked. Did it help anything? Did it change anything? Did smoking do anything except make you feel worse than you already did? Each time you smoke you are putting nicotine back in your system. You smoked because you are an addict. When you give in to the addiction, you are telling your mind that it is ok to have just one. Just one isn't ever going to be enough. N.O.P.E. Not One Puff Ever is the only way to quit. Brush yourself off and refuse to give in to the horrible addiction again. So many times I tried to quit and gave up because I had "one". Don't let that be you. Get on the quit wagon and hold on tight. Take it one day at a time and five minutes at a time if you have to. We can all do anything for 5 minutes. Once you break free of the addiction you will be so glad you did.
