Is it normal to still crave?

Pokerbrat this is something that helped me when I read this at the beginning of my quit, I just couldn't on some days quit thinking about smoking. " When you deeply feel that cigarettes are not the magic stick you need to cope with your emotions you become a non-smoker in your body as well as in your mind". hope you are doing well today..are you a poker player? There are alot of non smoking poker rooms here in AZ now, even though you can smoke at other places in the casino. too bad that post got cut off, but understanding your triggers/mental associations to smoking will help strenghten your quit. Mentally, I associated just about everything with smoking, waking up in the am with coffee, driving to work, work breaks, driving home from work, talking on the phone, sitting on my patio reading, breaks while I was cooking dinner, having a glass of wine, before bed, sheesh, almost every activity in my life was associated with smoking. So, we are doing good. We are overcoming this addiction. new me My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/26/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 66 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,584 Amount Saved: $330.00 Life Gained: Days: 9 Hrs: 3 Mins: 56 Seconds: 48

hey pokerbrat, glad that you are feeling good! You should get your quit meter going so you can see your days add up. It is kind of a motivator. The author of that book is allen carr; read and ponder. I do not know if I agree that there is an "easy way" to quit smoking, but he has some wonderful insight into the quitting process...the behavorial and mental aspects of it. We do have thousands of smoking triggers. If you do a topic search on "triggers" you will get some great info. There is one thread called "Nicotine, rewards, and the brain". Iwill find it and bump it for you. Walking in 90 degrees..you are a winner. Have another good smoke free day. new me My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/26/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 66 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,584 Amount Saved: $330.00 Life Gained: Days: 9 Hrs: 2 Mins: 21 Seconds: 15

Thanks new me, your right it is an abusive relationship, and I should see it that way. I walked today at lunch, it was 90 degrees outside, I walked 2 1/2 miles in 40 minutes, breathing was a huge problem. But the walk always helps me reduce my stress levels. I'm coming to realize that the feelings I'm having are only generated by my brain, because my brain associates certain events and activities with nicotine. I'm also coming to realize that I have this thing beat, but I am so used to failing at things like this that I cannot seem to come to terms with being successful. But I have won, I am smoke free, I am free. So what if I have an uncomfortable feeling every once in a while. I need to stop whining about it and realize my body is healing itself, and that feeling is the feeling of freedom. I feel good right now, everything seems clear in my mind. My batteries are fully charged for another day of battle...a battle that I will win again. Thanks again new me, and I'll check out the book.

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

16 years ago 0 598 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi pokerbrat, I suggested this to tryagain, so now I will suggest it to you. Go to the library and get "the easy way to stop smoking" . The biggest turn around for alot of smokers is definitely mental. I yearned to smoke, every ounce of my being called out for nicotine. I missed sitting on my patio with a cup of coffee and smoking HUNDREDS of cigarettes. (one is too many, a thousand is never enough). THINK! What do we miss? The possibility of contracting an irreversable smoking related disease that dooms us to a slow death? The wonderful smell of stale smoke on our clothes, hair, and breath. Not being able to climb a flight of stairs, or even mop the floor without getting winded? (if you have not reached this stage yet, just continue to smoke and you will). Do we miss spending $180.00-$500.00 a month for the privilege of helping our health deteriorate? Do we miss not being able to be comfortable in a movie theatre, library, airplane, because we are jonsing for a FIX? Do we miss the fact that cigarettes had so much control over our lives? We don't miss any of those things..and the list could go on and on. We are nicotine addicts. In reality, we do not miss anything about smoking. We are just recovering from a nasty addiction; and that takes time. You are doing great. Change the way you think about smoking. It is like an abusive relationship..kick the abuser to the curb. Don't let him back into your home so he has the opportunity to eventually kill you. Do not romaticize smoking. There is nothing good about it. When I have cravings, which I still do, I will use self talk..SMOKING, I HATE YOU...whatever. We want to live free. We will get there. Congratulations on almost 2 months smoke free! Rejoice. new me My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/26/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 65 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,560 Amount Saved: $325.00 Life Gained: Days: 9 Hrs: 0 Mins: 29 Seconds: 50

Thanks Sparky, thats a good way of describing it, as "chatter", bec ause thats how it sounds in my head. I will keep fighting the urge, one fight at a time. The demon is getting weaker every day, and my will is starting to overcome. Its a nice feeling, but I miss my old so called "friend". Thats the dangerous part, the yearning.

Pokerbrat, you tell that demon to go to HE$$!! You are stonger than he is. I know exactly what that chatter is, don't let it win. I lost to many quits listening to that chatter. It is so worth it to keep going. When the chatter starts, remind yourself that you are a non-smoker, that you deserve to free, that you rule your body not the demon. You (we) can do this!! I want to thank everyone who has responded to this thread, your all wonderful people, I wish I was as upbeat as most of you about the quit, but it still seems to be a burden right now, and starting up again sounds so easy. I know I cannot, and my body seems to be past the nicotine withdrawl, but my brain can't move on. Oh well, the craves come, and I try and cut them off quickly as one of you suggested. The fight gets just a little easier everyday. I pray for the day when I wake up and don't even think about it, that is when I'll truely be a non-smoker. I hope that day comes soon, I fear I am not as strong as the majority of you out there. The junkie in me is screaming in my head, making me sweat. He is persistant and never sleeps. He is rabid, evil, and starving...he is dangerous. Beating him will be a huge triumph, a step into the light, back to life again, the way it was meant to live. I always knew I should have been a writer..LOL Anyway, got that off my chest. Thanks for all your support, keep it coming, God knows I need it.
