Cold Turkey vs NRT

Okay......here are the thoughts from someone who has only gone 5 hrs smoke free right now....but anyway...... First off, we do not get addicted to the patch....we are addicted to the nicotine, not the patch...that is no secret. Second, Let us look at the term "smoking".... The word itself implies that there is smoke......last time i looked there was no smoke coming from the patches...lol......So, therefore, you are not smoking. The patch is designed to help us break the habit part of this nasty addiction.....the habit of having one at a certain place, certain time etc......And each step of the patch gives us lower levels of nicotine in our body. My personal thoughts, if you are not physically smoking a cigarette, you have quit. So, what if you are using the patch or any other NRT....NRT's are tools to help make our quit easier and more manageable. That is it. Some people prefer to go cold turkey..and good for them.....but there is nothing wrong with people who use NRT's. I really hope that person who was making those comments did not upset you or discourage you in your quit...... Don't allow it.... You have 49 days in...that is awesome!!!!!! Hey Unhooked, I am probably unqualified to answer but in my opinion you've 'quit smoking' and whatever method used is neither here nor there. And either way thats amazing. Some here would say 'addicts that chose not to smoke' so that would include the 4 & 5 year old CT'er. Its just that the addiction gets less as time passes. Don't know if anyone is going to agree on that though? Hey, everybody. I'm interested in getting some opinions on this. I was at a barbecue yesterday & there were 2 cold turkey quitters there, one 5 years quit & one 4 years, & a truly social smoker. The 5-year cold turkey quitter felt that I have not REALLY quit because I am still using patches. In fact, what he said was, "you aren't realy quitting because you don't know that you aren't addicted to the patch & you won't know until you are completely done with them. You don't even know if you can quit." The other cold turkey quitter & the social smoker agreed with me that smoke-free is the first step to nicotine-free and everyone should do whatever works for them. My question for all of you is, how quit is quit? Are we still just "trying" as long as we're using an NRT or medication? Can we say we have quit before we're nekkid or are we just playing at it?
