What a tobacco company says

Good thread! This has bothered me for a long time, even when I still smoked. The government is making it harder & harder for smokers to smoke. Smokers are being pushed further & further away from buildings & at the end of May, my employer is making all hospital property smoke free. This includes the parking lot & the cars parked in the parking lot....huge fines for anyone that gets caught in their car smoking, even if the windows are up. I am in Ontario & there is tons of provincial help for people that want to quit. The government will give away free patches or gum, support people only a phone call away but they won't take cigarettes off the market & they NEVER will. There is just too much money to be made off of them. I still can view this from a smokers perspective. Not many smokers complained when we were forced to smoke outside...it was the right thing to do. Then we couldn't smoke if we were withing 9 meters of any entrance & if there was a window or intake air vent, had to be 9 meters from it too, which basically put you in the middle of no where. Now, you can't even light up if you are on the property & yet they are still legal. I sound like I am not committed to my quit but I really am. It is such a contradiction.....they are making the act illegal but the product is still legal to buy :confuse: My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/2/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 26 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 660 Amount Saved: $210.86 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 19 Mins: 12 Seconds: 23

I think we also have to take into consideration...what role the government takes in the whole cigarette=legal drug situation. How much of every pack of cigarette goes to the government for taxes? I too wish they would make cigarettes illegal. I know I would never have smoked if...29 years ago...I wouldn't have been able to put my .50 in a machine and get out that first pack of cigarettes...and yes...I remember that moment like it was yesterday...and I remember the moment when I actually inhaled to the point where the smoke went into my lungs... I hate the tobacco companies...with a passion!! NOw I just have to hate them enough to continue to never buy another pack of cigarettes... Are there any steps being made toward making cigarettes illegal? Wow, what an eye-opener. I never even gave any of this any thought...but of course it would make perfect sense to maximize profit by maximizing addiction. OK, I just turned into what I swore I would never be, one of those hard-core anti-smoking types. This stuff should be illegal, or at least highly restricted. I'm certainly glad I stopped giving them my money. Just to add to your post freemom. Some of the chemicals in cigarettes are also used in the manufacturing of crystal meth.Try making that in your basement and you,ll have more law enforcement people in your house than you can shake a stick at.But tobacco companys are allowed to continue to make their products. Kind of makes you wonder who,es side the government is on ???? :confuse: My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/21/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 33 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 601 Amount Saved: $330 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 21 Mins: 24 Seconds: 35

Freemom, I was on a Canadian Tobacco Co. website. And they said, "Quitting is an adult decision, and while it is difficult to quit, it can be done." Gee, don't they make it sound easy. Cigarettes should definitely be illegal!!!! I betcha I can rival you with the mouthful I had to ask for. 'Large Matinee Slims Ultra Mild 100's' That's reason enough to quit, I got tired of saying it!!!! Some more interesting facts, though I don't totally get all the scientific details. 1- Tobacco companies manipulate the PH levels of the smoke so you get more "free nicotine" (sort of like free base cocaine or crack) and more of a "kick" without an increase in the physical nic or tar levels! 2- Although ammonia seems to be the original source for the above, they also use a lot of sugars, which when burned produce a chemical called Acetaldehyde which acts to enhance nicotine's effect on our brains. 3- Licorice and cocoa both contain chemicals that act as bronchodilators - in other words, they help your lungs absorb more nicotine, etc. without as much discomfort. 4- There are ingredients called nicotine levulinate and levulinic acid in cigarettes which help the nicotine bind to receptors in our brains. This was (supposedly) from research done by RJR which indicates that they were looking for ways to make cigs more addictive! There is lots more I'm sure... but all this stuff really really makes me mad. The tobacco companies sure did rope us all in and do the best they could to keep us captive. More power to us, who are working so hard to get free! And now, off to bed I must go. I'm gonna be tired tomorrow - but I will not smoke! Freemom, Thank you for the post. That was really interesting reading. It really is a simple little equation isn't it? Nicotine is a highly addictive DRUG -> It should be ILLEGAL.
