Smoking: When & How Long?

17 years ago 0 925 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Good question SammiJo, I was 17...never wanted to smoke but got held in a corner by some girlfriends (some friends huh) and forced to smoke one whole cigarette. One was all it took. Smoked at least 25 a day and worked my way up to 40-45 a day. Didn't smoke long enough for the addict in me and way too long for the real/physical me. Started at about age 14 or so, and so that makes it about 42 years (once quit for 9 months). Usually 30-40 cigs per day. Now I prefer to focus on the ones I am NOT smoking! Don't look back, look forward to a life of non-smoking! I started smoking at 17 and smoked off and on for about 10 1/2 years. I say "off and on" because it took me about 4 years to really get addicted. I think I was one of those "social smokers" for the first few years, and then at 21, really got addicted. After that, I'd quit every few months... sometimes for a few weeks, sometimes for a month or 2... one time, for 10 months. I was always in the process of quitting... until now where the active quit is over and I'm on cruise control and don't consider myself "quitting" anymore. I've QUIT! FINALLY! Crave the Quit! I started to sneak them at the age of 12 by the time I was 16 I was smoking 1 1/2 to 2 packs a day until 21 days ago. It's been 26years of steady smoking. The love of my life died 16 years ago and he always begged me to stop smoking. This weekend I'm going to the cementary and let him know I finally quit!!! Sounds weird but I never thought I could even make it day without. No way am I going back through those withdrawals again!!! Susie144 I'm glad you shared because those challenges in life are emotionally draining and hard to deal with in general. I've been faced with a few lately and I also find it hard which is why I come on here and read and write congratulations to all of you!! I started at 17, so that was 42 years. I have "quit" 4 times. Each time for different reasons. Lost first quit after 4 months because I was stressed out. Lost 2nd quit after 4 months when my sister died suddenly. Lost 3rd quit after 8 months because I wanted to get back to normal. Yes.......I know but I had been "forced" to give up because I was awaiting reconstruction surgery following a double mastectomy for breast cancer. Boy that first ciggie was so good. The next few thousand were not so good. This time I am quitting for my husband who has been told to by his doctor. I realise that the reason isn't so good and maybe it's why I am finding it tough going. This time I find that every day I am a tiny bit more resolved. My sense of smell is so much stronger and I honestly did not realise just how bad cigarette smoke smells. The money is also a big factor. In the space of 9 weeks we have saved 900 which is almost $1700!!! Mind you there are the really bad days when I would do anything to smoke. I have been walking a lot and funnily enough thinking a lot about stuff. Anyway I know you were not really looking for a book on the subject but felt like sharing. :| My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/31/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 65 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,958 Amount Saved: 487.5 Life Gained: Days: 8 Hrs: 12 Mins: 22 Seconds: 53

When did you start smoking and for how long were you a smoker? I started smoking regularly when I was 15, and (with the exception of two 6-month quits) smoked for the next 30 years.
