woohoooo Sounds like you skipped the baby steps and went for the gold! Good for you!!! AND I must add that your fiance sounds great. Sometimes crying is such a wonderful release! Remember what you said about skiing..that it's important to you. Sometimes telling ourselves that it's more important than our fears, helps too. Sometimes I find I give in to it and other times, it makes me furious to the point of being determined NOT to give in to it. Keep up the good work and let us know how Texas goes for you!! :) Celebrate your successes, no matter how small or far apart...they are still worthy of recognition!!

Wow! You did it! You go girl! Its great that your fiance is doing his best to be supportive. Now you are going to TEXAS? Hope it goes well for you. Must be nice to be able to take all those trips. Wish I could go with you! Relax and have a great time.

Thanks so much for all your thoughts and words of advice. I actually managed to ski two whole days in spite of the fear and I had a blast in between the thoughts that I might have a heart attack. LOL I woke up yesterday from a nightmare where I was planning my funeral and I was freaked out and almost let the fear get to me but I didnt and managed to ski. It was a huge accomplishment for me because skiing is so important to me. Today we came home and I had a really hard afternoon. I almost went to the ER which I have never done before. I had pain in my left shoulder and that same pain under my rib cage and I got really scared. The funny thing is that right when I was at my worst my new counselor happened to call. I was relieved because I got to tell her what I was feeling, and the funny thing is those pains subsided a lot. My fiance was so great this weekend too. The first day that we were there I was pretty panicky and I cryed pretty hard but we had a great talk because this is so frustrating for him to watch me suffer so much and of course being a man he wants to fix me sometimes but I told him my life revolves in about five minute chunks sometimes just trying to work through the fear. He was so great and understanding. We actually went to a really nice dinner last night and it was very relaxing and romantic. I feel like this trip away was so helpful so I just hope to keep up the progress. I am now leaving for another trip in Tx tomorrow. This will be the longest distance I have been away from home in awhile and I have to actually spend one evening away from my fiance and am pretty worried about that so we will see how that goes. Thanks again and hope to hear back from you all.

Dear jmodge, I feel for you, this is a tough situation. The combinations of the mountain and your friends just exaserbates everything. At this point your going to have to try the relaxation techniques (deep breath, meditate) and just try and talk to yourself. Just do the best you can. Susanne

It really boils down to the fear of having an attack, you know your not going to die, but if you have an attack, the thoughts of dying come with it. Sometimes the reassurance from your safe person that you can leave if you dont feel well or anxiety comes on, will have an effect that you wont have an attack and enjoy yourself, rather than the we HAVE to go, we HAVE to stay scenario, that just adds to the pressure, especially since your not totally desensitized to your feelings and physical symptoms of anxiety yet, you have to set the pace for recovery. Dont you dare beat yourself up over it if you end up not going!! Or if you do and you did well, you BETTER get on here and tell us ALL about it!! Trish

Jmodge, I know how you feel. I love to ski too and once had an attack on the mountain and the ski patrol had to take me to the lodge. No one knew but me cause I said I had been dealing with the flu and not feeling well. No questions were asked. Anyway, as for your situation, just tell youself "I can do this - I love to ski". Try to remember what it was like when you use to be relaxed. I know it's hard, but try not to think about your panic disorder and maybe it won't creep up on you. Think how great you will feel if you make it through without feeling panic!! Good Luck and Have FUN!!!! I'm jealous - I wish I were going skiing this weekend!!!! :p
