Tony, My smoking/quitting history is kind of like yours. I've had a 7 year quit and a few three year quits as well as one early this year of 3 months. As Danielle said, I think people like you and me need to figure out what led to these returns to smoking and how we will avoid it in the future. I feel like I need to keep visiting this site and keeping my reasons for quitting in the first place in my mind. I also think giving encouragement and support to others will help keep me from relapsing back to smoking. Hi TonyS! Welcome and well met! I have been smoking for 40 years and have had lots of attempts to quit that were mostly sabotaged by me in that I kept sneaking a puff here and there leading to a pack and a half in no time at all. The longest was for 5 months and 1 day. I think I rewarded myself for 5 months with a smoke. Silly thing to do, but then, so is smoking in general. If you have relapsed repeatedly because of drinking, well, I don't have to actually SAY "don't drink" do I? I could give you one of Duckie's stern looks, but that's better done by Duckie! And anyway, you know what you need to do. The true definition of insanity is continuing to do what you have been doing while expecting different results... and since I am a psych nurse, I know what I'm talking about! What is it that makes you decide to drink? I'm not trying to be insulting, but do you need to drink if it causes you such trouble in the end? Not drinking seems the lesser of the evils, but then, I only drink about 2 times a year, and only at my own home where there are never any smokes. So maybe I'm talking through my feathers, but possibly you could think about why you drink and are you really just planning to smoke but using drinking as an excuse to do so? Sorry, just my thoughts. Take what you like and leave the rest. Hi Tony. Welcome and congratulations on your quit! I'm not as bad as my Dad was (he had a cigarette before he got out of bed in the morning)! Ah yes..the good old days! I switched to tea instead of coffee, and chew a really minty peice of sugarfree gum. Try something different.. your coffee black instead of with cream, whatever, just break the usual routine. I keep a bottle of water in the car, and sip that at every stoplight. Think of a different reward..a smartie if you're into chocolate..a handful of sunflower seeds, something yummie to satisfy that "I've worked hard now I deserve something" urge. Smile! Please try to figure out what happened with your relapses, and plan a strategy to avoid the same thing happening again. Welcome, TonyS! :) I used to be C&C in the morning (Coffee & Cigs). That's my ritual start of the day! In the first few days when I started this quit, I avoided taking coffee in the morning ... It was hard, really hard! But I pulled through. From the second week onwards, I could then enjoy my coffee without a cig! Actually, it's not entirely correct, as I quit with the help of an NRT inhaler, and I did have a puff or two with the coffee ... :) Cheers, nmc My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 100 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,009 Amount Saved: $500 Life Gained: Days: 18 Hrs: 17 Mins: 59 Seconds: 4

ParrotLady: "... The longest was for 5 months and 1 day. I think I rewarded myself for 5 months with a smoke. Silly thing to do, but then, so is smoking in general. ..." That happened to me too ! The longest quit I could keep was about 6 months, and the, ... on cigarette took me back to smoking again! :( That's why for this quit, I totally rule out the option of smoking - not even one puff - and I will use all avalable means to protect my quit. NOPE - Not One Puff Ever - is the best strategy. :) Cheers, nmc My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 103 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,031 Amount Saved: $515 Life Gained: Days: 19 Hrs: 3 Mins: 39 Seconds: 58

TonyS, Recognition of the situations that put you at risk for a slip or relapse is the first step. Having a plan before your in those situations can also be helpful. Moderating your consumption is a great one! Some members have also found it helpful to have a reward planned and to bring along a few coping strategies. (Gum, a few pieces of candy, whatever works best for you.) Danielle _______________________ The SSC Support Team

TonyS, Congratulations on quitting and welcome to the SSC! Start working the program tools on your left and reading through our forums. Take some time to look back at previous relapses. What led to them? What will you do differently this time? If you have any questions, just ask. We are always here to help. Danielle ______________________ The SSC Support Team
