oh golly, that sounds like a lot of fun, going to the Dominican! But about the smoking friend. I'm sure she loves you. You have been friends for so long that she probably knows you better than you know yourself. So when you tell her you WILL NOT be around smoke and will she please take it outside, I'm positive she will know you mean it. And in the mean time, do have a great time! You do so deserve the freedom! Hi Collen About a month into my quit I went to Spain on hols for 3 weeks. I had a drink and enjoyed myself. HONESTLY by denying yourself the other pleasures in life you make yourself more miserable and more prone to smoking! Have a ball but just don't smoke!! I agree - I would ask the friend to please not smoke in the room. But I would also have a drink. Not LOADS of drink, just in case, but I still would have some. It's that deprivation thing already talked about. Take nibbles, or chew on a straw. I have a smoking friend coming to stay this weekend. Had another here a few weeks back and let her smoke in my house (weather was dreadful for outside smokes) but I felt strong then and it wasn't a prob. This time, it might be so she has to go out. You CAN do this. Have a fantastic time. Today, a smoking friend explained to me that since her divorce, smoking is the only thing she has control over!!!??? HAHA! Let's think about that.... No, I think her smoking has control of her. She adamantly disagrees. Be strong. Keep the quit. Let's tame the beast! Collen- I know how you feel. One of my best friends was my 'enabler' in a previous failed attempt. I don't think she wants me to succeed, as it gives her nobody else to really 'smoke' with. Be very careful and regard your quit as being more important. My thoughts and prayers are with you. You have 31 days under your belt. Don't throw it away. Believe me---you will regret it if you do! HI Colleen - One really wonderful thing about this place is that we are all so different and our quits are as different :) I would say, from experience, protect your quit with everything in you at all times... What can sound simple can end up not being so simple in the moment... I would ask her to not smoke in the room - but that's me - - I am someone who has been very careful in protecting my quit at all costs... And have had not one slip due to the same... Some are as protective and some have taken risks (some kept their quits and some lost them in the risks). Your quit is very young and vulnerable... some do OK with a situation like this one and some don't... Thanks for all the feedback! I'm feeling so much better today about this whole thing. You know the only thing I have to concern myself with is whether or not I light up. Period. Thoughts have no power ... cravings have no power ... her smoking has no power. I HAVE A CHOICE TODAY AND AS LONG AS I DO NOT PUT NICOTINE BACK INTO MY BODY I HAVE ALL THE POWER!!!! And today I have faith and I have made a decision. NOPE! PERIOD! Plus there is internet access at the hotel so if I want to read and post I can. :) Thanks again Colleen My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/16/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 33 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 845 Amount Saved: $396 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 19 Mins: 13 Seconds: 5

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

18 years ago 0 186 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Well there has been something going on in my quit that I have been in denial of and now is the time to face the truth. Next Tuesday I am going to The Dominican with a friend to witness her daughter's wedding. My hubby gifted me with this trip before we made the decision to quit smoking. Doesn't sound like a problem does it? The problem is that this friend has been one of my major smoking buddies since we were in our early 20's. Almost 30 years now. I only told her a few days ago that I have quit. I guess I was nervous to tell her ... in the past she's not been real supportive of other quit attempts. She and I will be sharing a room while we are there. We are staying at an all inclusive resort and I've also made the decision not to drink any of that lovely FREE alcohol. I REALLY want to keep my quit and as much as I love a pina colada (specially at one of those beach bars) I don't trust myself not to grab one of her smokes if I've been drinking! You know, if hubby wouldn't have laid out a coupla grand for this I wouldn't even go! I'm hoping they have REALLY strict smoking laws in The Dominican! :) Any feedback would be appreciated! Cigarettes Not Smoked

~Just4Today~ Hi :) I just cleaned up the dinner dishes and saw your post. Gosh, you have a great attitude! You obviously have made a very strong commitment to yourself to stay quit and therefore you CAN/WILL stay quit in The Dominican. Believe it. The power is within you. -Tell your friend your quit is like an infant and if she loves you she will help you protect it. (including not smoking in the room you share) -Keep gum, a straw or whatever you use (with you at all times) -Make it okay to take a walk and get away from tempting moments When smoking is truly not option (come hell or high water) its nice to have the distraction of being in a new environment. You can concentrate on having a great time! I say live it up!
