Forever or a day?

17 years ago 0 2670 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
hey penguin, I understand what you mean, but I think it is best if you simply say 'I am not going to smoke today' and take it one day at a time , as forever may be a bit much to aim for straight away later lynne My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/24/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 5 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 80 Amount Saved: 20 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 14 Mins: 27 Seconds: 37

HI! I think all the points made were excellent and I only have one thing to add: It's really up to you to decide what you can or can not handle. I mean, you might say forever today, but tomorrow you might say just get through the next 10 minutes. Remember, each quit is as unique as the quitter. It's whatever works for you. And I think we have to be flexible in our quits, as well. A rigid "formula" will give us nothing to fall back on when life hands us a test. And there will be tests, of that I am very sure. congrats on your 4 days, it's fantastic! Penguin, I agree with you! One day I might be strong enough to say the "forever" word but at this point in my quit I'm sticking with "one day at a time" and when that's overwhelming I go with "one moment at a time." Forever seems awfully ominous when it comes to smoking, especially in the beginning stages. Maybe after a year or two that word could be successfully handled, but for right now, it could be a day at a time, or an hour, or even a minute. The key I think is BABY STEPS. That's what works for me. Great topic, Penguin. cheers, Jan My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/16/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 13 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 408 Amount Saved: $117 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 11 Mins: 36 Seconds: 17

Penguin, I think in the beginning it is best to stick with 1 day at a time. Forever can be overwelming at first. I know when I started I never wanted to smoke again.Period. However I could not focus on that. I thought if I just made it threw the first month I would be ok. So far I have. I never want to smoke again. But this addiction is a tricky one who knows what will happen in the future. God does, so I will put my faith in him and pray that I can stay quit forever. While he is helping me with today. Penquin, Even today, the thought of being quit "forever" seems too much for me. Actually, it makes me want to run out to the store and go buy cigarettes because I'm just not sure I can do "forever." I too had problems in the beginning with the "one day at a time" thing because I was smarter than that! I knew that even if I just stay quit today, I still won't be able to smoke tomorrow if I want to stay quit!!! So I had a hard time convincing myself of that. But, the time when I finally got it that we only quit for "right now" was after my very first slip back in July of last year (before the quit I'm on now.) I'd smoked that day and I was planning on going to the store and buying a pack and smoking 3 out of it. In fact, I even posted here that I smoked 4 cigarettes even though I'd only smoked one because I had planned to go buy smokes and smoke a few more. I mean, if you're going to smoke, what's the difference between 1 and 4, right??? Well, I told myself "I'll go in 5 minutes." And then in 5 minutes, I thought "I really don't want to go out right now... I'll go after dinner." And then after dinner, I thought "there's a show I really want to watch, I'll go when it's over." Well then I thought "I want to watch this show too." And the final thought was "It's time for bed. I guess I won't go buy any afterall." Without even knowing it, I'd used the "quit for right now" strategy, even though I'd already smoked that day! I didn't even realize that I was using a quit smoking strategy! So then later on, I realized that that's what this "quit for a day" or "quit for 5 minutes" is really all about! It's just about right now because we have no control right now what we will do tomorrow. Tomorrow, we can control tomorrow, but the only thing we can control is "right now." Congrats on those 4 days! You're doing great! Keep it up! Crave the Quit! Penguin, Very good question. Many members have found focusing on just the next hour or just today helpful. Some members have even set a time limit for renogotiation. Ex: I won't smoke for a week. Once the week is over I will decide if I want to go for another week or start smoking again. They all choose to set a new date and renegotiate. Keep strong. Congrats on 4 days! You know for me it really is whatever gets you through. If you need to focus one second, minute hour at a time great. If you need to look at your life in ten years without the crippling crutch then go for it. Do what works and do what you need to do to stay quit. Keep on quitting keep on cjhoosing freedom. Stay Strong glad to see you round these here parts.
