Losing confidence

Deli, Have no fear... what you are going through is completely normal.
it feels like I'm not progressing much with this quit.

I really do seem to be losing all my confidence in staying positive and calm every now and again - and particularly at this precise moment! Sometimes, the positivity could be pulsing all through me and then, just as I start to enjoy my freedom, I'm thrust into the depths of insecurity again

I was like this in the first and second week (although probably much worse!!)
Deli, this is totally normal! I too felt this way around 50 days. I felt like some days, I would be on top of the world with very few cravings and hardly thinking about cigarettes, and as soon as I started to feel the freedom, I was back in my funk, wanting to smoke again! It's very disheartening, I know, but it's also very normal! Quitting is most definitely a roller coaster ride. BUT, it sounds like you ARE progressing! You said yourself that you felt this way in the first two weeks, but moreso. OK! That's an improvement! Be careful not to expect too much too quickly! This is a difficult addiction to get over! It's not going to be completely beat (in most cases) in 50 days. Yes, there are the exceptions that we read about on this site, but many of us can't do that and that's OK! That doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with you! YOu're kicking one of the most difficult addictions there is! It's OK to feel cranky and irritable for a while.
Was the tobacco such a strong drug that it was the only thing that kept me from being so moody?
Yes! Probably!!! Tobacco IS a very strong drug! It is one of the most addictive drugs there is!!! So it's only natural that you're going to be moody, even 47 days into the quit! It doesn't happen overnight!
I wonder to myself if I should be taking this 'reward' business more seriously but, since I am self-employed, I am unable to spend money on luxuries without feeling that I'm being lavish beyond my means
So far from quitting, you have saved E141. I'm not sure what that is in dollars, since I'm over here across the pond, but I would venture to say that it's a nice chunk of change and will buy you somet

Deli, after meals is at the beginning very difficult, talking on the phone, coffee were the hardest for me. After meals I would get up right away purposely walk over to my kitchen counter where I kept all of my tools: straws cut in 3, mints, cinnamon gum, there is also cinnamon sticks ( I don't like them) maybe you would, I chewed so many straws, I would find them all over the house LOL. When I was on the phone I would hold the phone with the hand I used to hold my cigarette, I never gave up my coffee, instead of drinking it in the kitchen I would bring it to the computer and post while drinking it. I drink 4 bottles of water a day that's 8 glasses. I did this for about 6 weeks. Now I only need gum in my mouth but that's ok cinnamon gum gives me fresh breath all the time and it's sugarless. I hope this helps a little and if I can do it you can do it. On with the quit one day at a time :)Marie My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 96 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,454 Amount Saved: $384 Life Gained: Days: 12 Hrs: 18 Mins: 56 Seconds: 58

Deli- Sounds to me like normal behavior for someone who is 47 days drug-free. Congratulations on that magnificent acheivement! However, I have some pretty ODD behaviors (especially in my last quit that lasted about 70 days or so). I had horrible thoughts about the people I love...most I never shared (just thinking that way is a felony, I believe) I did not like anyone---especially myself! If it persists, you may want to talk with your Dr. about it. There may be some medications that would make a world of difference in your outlook. Sending loads of good wishes and prayers....

Good to hear your spirits are up Deli. Stay positive and when you have a 'down' day, don't let it get to you. We all have to flush our pity pots from time to time. The only thing that is truly yours that no one can control or take from you is your attitude. If you can make your attitude a positive one, everything else in life becomes relatively easier. If you keep this in mind, the choice to be positive is an easier one to make. And make no doubt about it ... it is a choice. The trick is not in how to be positive, it is in making the choice an easier one to choose. So how to do that. Make a list just like you did when you quit smoking. What are the pro's choosing to be positive? What are the con's. You will notice the con list has nothing written on it. Post your list up so that you see it, so that it will reinforce the right choice. Choose to be positive.
