Paying my Dues

17 years ago 0 2631 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Well I'm going to win the prize for being the biggest "Post" hog again today. (Honest you guys...I promise not to do this all the time) I have to admit that I started this quit with little expectation that I would succeed. I didn't have my tools packed and I hadn't planned it. The last time that I tried was 17 years ago - I thought that it would be easy and after 2 days, I realized that it was h***! I never wanted to go through that again. Well over the past 17 years, smoking has taken more and more control over my life. I have planned my life around smoking. I know that I am not as healthy as I could be. I feel ashamed of the fact that I smoke and try to hide it from co-workers and friends (then power smoked to make up for the time lost) I couldn't last more than 2 hours at dinner with friends and would turn down the invitation to go back and socialize because I wanted to go home and smoke. I was sick and tired of smoking..........but sooooo addicted. I keep reading about how most people have had to quit several times before they succeed. Most people succeed because they plan ahead. I've been backtracking and putting rewards in place, setting up distractions, trying to learn new coping mechanisms, posting often (too often) and i have made it for 12 days! I know that I didn't come into this quit with the right attitude but I really want to succeed. I don't ever want to do this again! But, I'm a teeny weeny bit skeeered that I haven't "paid my dues". Hoping I can learn from those who have quit before so that I can avoid going through this quitting process ever again. I need all the tools & advice that I can get my hands on! Also wondered if any other first time quitters have felt this way... Thanks Healer, Chevy....geesh I wish my memory was better...but it seems like only 1/4 of my memory is working!! But of course, Gonna tooo! Anyway, if i'm going to spend a day feeling sorry for myself...i'm gonna do it in style...bring your sleeping bag over to my living room for a great big Pity Party! No dues and no need for self-pity unless you want to. However, those who are not in a state of total disrepair like myself MUST provide entertainment. Dancing, singing, doesn't matter. Thanks you guys! Windy P.S. Windy, post, post, post, and did I mention post, this is mostly what saved me in the beginning. There is never a best time to quit, you just quit, when I quit I didn't know about this site, one day I was so overwhelmed I came to the computer looking for help, I think 3rd day of my quit and found SSC. I posted raved and ranted and always recieved help and it always worked for me, because no one judged me. So if this is working for you, let it be a reward for you, I used it as a reward. I also spent hours typing away to keep the fingers busy, especially in the am as this was the worse time for me. Always happy to read your posts, take care we're here for you. :)Marie My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 103 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,545 Amount Saved: $412 Life Gained: Days: 13 Hrs: 14 Mins: 3 Seconds: 2

I didn't plan ahead. I quit on the spur of the moment - "I'll quit when I run out of smokes...". This is my first attempt at quitting. ... and my last. I'm never going back to smoking. Why would I do that to myself? Once addiction is brought out into the light, it makes no sense to go back to it. Smoking serves no 'real' purpose other than to kill people. Windy, Post all you want, we love hearing from you. You may not have prepared for your quit but you are putting in the necessary work to find what strategies work best for you. You're doing great! The key determinants of successful behavior change are determination and willingness to change. Danielle _____________________ The SSC Support Team

Windy, You can come here, take what you like and you owe nobody anything. Perhaps what you are are referring to (I'm not sure) is people who say 'I owe this site for my quit and want to pay back' I feel like this - it's only an opinion, but want to help others if I can take care Mr Ed :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 223 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,709 Amount Saved: 1672.5 Life Gained: Days: 37 Hrs: 6 Mins: 48 Seconds: 45

Hi windy - I Quit for the first time cold turkey with no plan to Quit at that time, and never looked back - no slips... Soooo - allow yout Quit to be just that, friend... There are many posts here about how difficult and dramatic a Quit can be, and there are also posts that speak to the calmer, quieter Quit... Allow yours to be YOURS... No dues to pay, dear one... Just stay focused and strong and don't go looking for someting bad to happen or for a slip to occur... I had none and my Quit buddies have done beautifully as well:) Most posts here are about asking for support but rest assured that the easier and calmer Quit is also the truth... Stay strong - and keep your tookbox of coping skiils close at hand just in case you need 'em :) Blessings- Healer My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 202 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,096 Amount Saved: $939.3 Life Gained: Days: 26 Hrs: 7 Mins: 2 Seconds: 57

Windy, there is no such thing as too many posts. :) Type all you want, the SSC will get bigger harddrives. :p As far as people having to quit many times, this is my first real quit. I have no doubt it will be my last. (see slip-free stats below) I had it pretty easy compared to many I've seen. I often wondered whether I had not paid my dues and worried that the shoe or ax or whatever was fixing to fall on me to knock me out of my quit. But that was around this time last year, so I guess it never happened. That's not to say I didn't have some rough spots, but they passed just like every one said they would. Some who plan ahead and have everything in place succeed, and some fail. Some who quit on impulse succeed, and some fail. The keys are attitude and the desire to be quit. Planning is just something to make it a bit easier, so you don't have to learn on the fly, when your head's already pretty messed up (LOL). Just know that I have seen a few people come into a quit convinced they don't want to, that they can't, that they will fail, and these people realized what smoking was doing to them, how much better they were for quitting, and the quit became real and something they wanted. Will this be your last quit? I don't have a clue. I hope so. You are certainly working at it and doing a great job, too. Posting is one of your tools. Don't set that tool down, keep using it. It won't wear out. Keep up the good quit, Windy. :) Shevie My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/23/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 488 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 9,778 Amount Saved: $1854.4 Life Gained: Days: 91 Hrs: 3 Mins: 21 Seconds: 10
