Windy: I too feel same way you do about whatever you are feeling ya gotta go have a smoke, and it helps me deal, and has worked for a long time. I'm so mad at that process because I go out and spend a lot of time smoking when there are other things to be done. 10 minuites here and there add up in a days time. I feel like they are making me lazy. Which starts a cycle of self-loathing. Then I go out a little later and do the same again. I've gotten really sick of it, I don't like that feeling, and finally decided to take control of it. I'm sure I will find that old energy soon, but until then at least I'm free of the cycle. I too am so inspired by all who are sharing their stories and words of encouragement. I know you can do it! So if you find a system that works please share. Thanks you guys....it's almost bedtime so I made it through another day. Sparky...I see your name on here alot. It really inspires me to know that someone can quit after 50 years. I'm going to work on that list (I hate housework so that one won't do...I always get it done first thing Saturday morning so I can get it over with)I've been looking a night courses and might try something like that. You guys are so right...distraction is great (Blue Jays game last week and didn't think about smoking all day/went to my nephew's game last night which kept me busy till 9) It's the nights when I don't have anything planned that are killers (and those used to be my favourite nights!!??) Butterfly, I am using the patch...but honestly I think that if I can overcome the psychological addiction, I will be okay with the physical addiction. I never smoked in the morning and for the past two years, i haven't smoked until the end of the day. (That was my first step in quitting smoking - delay that first cigarette - i just made up for it by smoking more at night though) I remember a time when I couldn't write an essay or a report without smoking. (I would take paperwork home so I could smoke while doing it) Now I don't think twice about doing long reports at work soooooooooo surely I should be able to other things without smoking too right???) I knew quitting wouldn't be easy and it's not...but boy would it be nice to get to the end of this journey! I have been reading alot of discussions about people experiencing depression after quitting and this is a big worry for me. I started smoking well before I was old enough to make good decisions so I taught myself to rely on cigarettes for EVERYTHING. Feeling depressed - have a cigarette, Feeling anxious - have a cigarette, Feeling out of place - have a cigarette, Feeling bored - have a cigarette, Feeling stressed - have 20 cigarettes, etc etc I have been using cigarettes to deal with all my problems for over 20 years and NOW I AM GOING TO GIVE THEM AWAY!! I guess we all reach some stage where the benefits of quitting outweigh the desire to keep smoking but today is a bad day and I really want to smoke. I am sick and tired of cigarettes controlling my life and I am sick and tired of being a smoker but I don't know what to do when I feel depressed, anxious, bored, stressed etc. HELP! Hi Windy, Nice to hear from you. At the moment im tryin to use the old visualising technique, you know, "if you can see it, you can be it" that kinda thing. For example on the road i usually walk my dog and usually have my smoke, i try to visualise myself a little farther along the road, callin me to come on sayin "this is where you want to be, here with me a non smoker, I am you. BUT I DONT SMOKE !" Sounds kinda nuts dont it? To be truthful im tryin anything to get into the right mindset for my next attempt. As for you , you are doin amazingly well. Full credit to you. Keep up the good fight..... Speak to you soon... AL

Windy- I am right there with you!! I started when I was 15 yrs old now at 35 I am learning how to cope with life all over. I have gone through alot of stages this past 3 weeks. Just feeling lost, alone and not sure what my purpose is. And I also went through an anger faze...that I let smokes control me for so long. We all have to almost relearn life and coping. You are not alone in this and it does get better. I feel so much better and now see quitting as a day by day getting my health back. And I smell kinda pretty now!!!!! ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/21/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 24 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 609 Amount Saved: $84 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 23 Mins: 5 Seconds: 57

Windy, You're most certainly NOT alone and you're not the only one who feels, or has felt, this way. Just keep telling yourself how much you want to be an ex-smoker and you will be one! I agree with Healer; distraction is key! Make a list of things that you will do when the craving hits... it's amazing how fast the craving will go by when you put your mind on something else. Are you on any NRT? If not, then the nicotine is, or almost is, out of your system, so that's great! The first week is tough, but you CAN do this! Stick close to the site and read and post! It really does help! Crave the Quit!
