World Cup Fever.....................

19 years ago 0 711 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
It may not be big news to you over the pond people but World Cup Fever has started to grip the UK (and by the way the USA is expected to do well). One of the pleasures of major football (Soccer) tournaments for me has always been going to the local pub in the village to watch with friends, to drink beer and soak up the atmosphere. Only problem now is................at six months stopped..........soaking up the atmosphere means soaking up loads of secondhand smoke and coming home smelling like an ashtray :8o: So does this mean that I have lost out by stopping smoking???????? Now let me see??????? I have a fabulous sense of smell. I have a lot more money. I am not dying a little bit more with every inhalation of filth. I do not stink. I have more energy. My wife likes kissing me again. My kids are impressed with me. I've noticed that most of my friends don't smoke. Food tastes great. I've put weight on but I don't care and I will lose it. I feel really, really great!!!!! I've set up a huge projector and screen linked to the TV and am inviting all my non smoking friends to watch with me. So, have I lost out? What I have done is to change my lifestyle and re-evaluate what is important. I still go to the pub occasinally to meet a few friends and to drink good beer. What I used to go to the pub for was to smoke.........I never smoked at home so would make excuses to go out. What I am trying to say is that stopping smoking is a lifestyle change.....in my opinion, for the better. Accept that some things have to change and your task will be easier. Mope about it and you encourage yourself to fail. In case you haven't noticed...............I never say "giving up" smoking..................giving up what? Drug addiction? Death? Bad breath? Disease? No money or self esteem? And by the way...............will we win the world cup? I don't know. I hope so. But whatever happens................I won't miss that smoky atmosphere or any of the pleasure or fun in finding out. The Mad (world cup crazy) Englishman. I recently stayed overnight in a "smoking" hotel room, (no, it wasn't on fire,) due to an unplanned stop to avoid very bad weather. Now, we no longer have "smoking" sections in restaurants & most bars are smoke-free, as well, so this was my first time experiencing that. And I am here to tell you that I never thought I would react the way I did in that "smoking" room. It almost gagged me. I actually felt like I was having trouble breathing. I normally am not a whiner and in fact, had to keep my mouth shut because we really had no choice. But, honestly, it was like a slap in the face when we opened the door and walked in. If my Quit was not totally cemented before, it definitely was after that! Maybe the same will happen to anyone going to a pub to watch the World Cup. Call it "Aversion Therapy". Cheers, everyone! I'll be out in the garden (hopefully in the sun, lol) avoiding anything to do with football! Have you noticed recently in the pubs very few people do smoke these days? And the ones that do look a bit odd, they stand out from the crowd. Very nice stats btw! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/17/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 80 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,616 Amount Saved: 200 Life Gained: Days: 10 Hrs: 11 Mins: 30 Seconds: 54

On Saturday for England's opening game in the World Cup I shall pass on the pub and take up my repose in my smoke-free, floral-scented lounge with balcony doors flung wide allowing fresh country air to invade the space and I will realise once more what a joy it is to be alive and a smoker no more. Mind you, I may turn to air blue if Paraguay scores! Penitent d751

Hey JuJu, I must be mad but because my super quit buddy is American I have had a moderate wager on your lot at 100/1 (such a sentimentalist!); much better odds than the skinny 7/1 about the likely winners ENGLAND! (We owe Brazil one!!) So, I have TWO irons in the fire yeah go Mr. Brian McBride et al! Bring it on!! Penitent d749
