When are we "quit"

18 years ago 0 682 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Shevie, I like your response about obsessing on the quit. I am sure in the beginning it will be hard not to but the more I think about your words here is what I come up with: If you obsess you are still giving control if not to the cig itself but to the idea of it.... Thanks for this thought, I shall not obsess...just nurture

Rainne... Real simple here. If you are quit you don't smoke, if you smoke you aren't quit. Hmmmm... You aren't smoking so you are quit! A non-smoker One day at a time. The freedom will eventually hit you and you will love it when it does! HI Rainne. I think the grammatical leap just happens. One day, without knowing it, you start saying "I quit" or "I used to smoke". Like Shevie (one of my heros) said, it goes along with the passing of the craves. I'm one year into this and still struggle at times. Most times smoking is not an issue but last weekend....wow. Anyway, it happens naturally. You will amaze yourself in the end. Keep it up. Hi, Rainne. There will come a time when you realize you've made the transition from quitter to ex-smoker. The difference is you will no longer be taking an active part in your quit. The craves will weaken to thoughts of smoking. Those thoughts will become memories of smoking, and eventually even those memories will fade to nothing. For me, the process was: "GAAAAAAA! I want a smoke! And I can't have one!! GAAAAAAAAA!" "Boy, a smoke would be nice right now. Oh, well. Ain't happening." "There was a time I'd have been smoking right now." And finally, around February, the transition: "When was the last time I thought of smoking? It's been a while." The only time smoking is on my mind now is pretty much when I'm on this site. Otherwise, it's like I never smoked before. Everybody progresses at their own rate. Some reach this point in weeks, others still haven't made it after a year. I think a lot of it has to do with how much focus you put on your quit. The more you pay close attention to it, and I mean an obsessive attention to every little nuance, the longer it will take. Congratulations on 8 smoke-free days, Rainne. Hell week's toast. Time to kick heck week to the gutter. :eg: Shevie My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/23/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 381 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,621 Amount Saved: $1447.8 Life Gained: Days: 71 Hrs: 0 Mins: 58 Seconds: 11

Got to agree with Penitent on this one. When someone offers me a cigarette I am really pleased with myself to respond by saying "no thanks I choose not to smoke anymore" Good luck and I wish you continued success with your quit. I have given up smoking. I don't smoke any more. I am an ex-smoker. That's about it! Penitent d751
