Why ? Why is it hard to stop smoking? Why do you want to smoke another cigarette?

I truly believe that addiction to nicotine is like any other addiction. And perhaps worse or as bad than many others. For me to quit, it was necessary for me to recognize my addiction and to learn about addiction - both the physical and the emotional aspects. I had to learn why I could never in my life have even one puff. Why did I want another cigarette? Because withdrawal for me felt like a loss of sanity, and smoking imediately brought some relief. I did not like being a blubbering idiot. I had to look at the long term goal (of saving my life) rather than the short-term relief (of having some emotional equilibrium). The patch helped some, but it was the information and learning about addiction and withdrawal that really helped me the most.
