An interesting statistic I read -- 80% of smokers do not get lung cancer, but 80% of the people who get lung cancer were smokers. I believe that smoking is among many things in our society today that contribute to cancer, including food additives, air pollution, plastics, etc. I know six women who have cancer right now. My good friend and coworker Donna has breast cancer that spread into her bones. My former coworker Joan has breast cancer and is having chemo. My neighbor Amy is having interferon treatments for a different kind of cancer. Three other coworkers - Lynne, Nancy, and Jennifer - are in various stages of treatment for various types of cancer. Donna is a smoker. The others are not. All of these women are so brave and strong and determined in their fights. Rather than feel sad for them, I believe each of them wants us all to share their hope and pray for new cures and treatments and leaders who will embrace science with a 21st century mind.
