Co-Worker Smokers

I'm sorry you're having to deal with the smokers who look down on us non-smokers. Too bad for them. They are missing out on a wonderful person who smells a hell of alot better than they do! If they continue to treat you as an outsider, so be it. You would do well to just ignore the name calling and ignorance, do your work and get on with your quit. When they get on your about being "stubborn" don't even reply...just look at them, smile and walk on. When their in the hospital with tubes coming out of every orafice they have because the smoking has robbed their lungs of air, I don't think they'll be smiling...they will be wishing they were as smart as you! Be strong...you are better than they are...smarter too! N.O.P.E. Well well...maybe there's hope for them yet! Keep staying strong and protect your quit no matter what. Soon they will see how you are really doing and will wish for that too...direct them to this site! Maybe that will get them headed in the right direction. I'm really proud of my quit (you should be too!) N.O.P.E. Did you ever have a friend quit while you smoked? I did. I had a roommate who quit and believe me... I made her life a living hell!!! Her boyfriend and I were making bets (right in front of her) as to how long it'd take her to fail, I made a point to smoke (in our apartment) right in front of her and enjoy my cigarette while she sucked on her straw, and I did everything I could to get her to go back to smoking... she did within a week. Was I mean? Yes. I was protecting MY quit. You see, when my friend quit, I no longer had my smoking buddy anymore. And heaven forbid, she kept the quit? I'd have to admit that it IS possible to quit and then I might have to do consider doing it myself. Smokers are often shunned by non-smokers, so it ends up being and "us versus them" thing and as soon as one of "us" quits, they suddenly become one of "them" and they will do everything they can to get their buddy back. It's a defense mechanism... they are protecting their addictions by trying to get you to smoke. Remember, this is an addiction... addicts do crazy things when their addictions are threatened... and that's what you've done by quitting... you've threatened THEIR addictions by proving that this is possible. Sure, for the first few days, they left you alone... because they didn't think you'd make it, but now, they're a little scared that they're losing one of them to "the dark side." The good news is that smokers watch quitters. They do. They want to see if you're going to succeed or fail... and if you succeed, then perhaps they will follow suit. The key thing is don't become one of "those" ex-smokers... the ones who preach to smokers about the dangers of smoking (did it ever work when someone did it to you? It didn't for me!) and don't shun them or exclude them because they still smoke... and hopefully things will go back to normal. After you've been quit for a while, it won't be hard to be able to go outside with them, even if they're smoking, and converse with them... but right now, that's probably not a good idea. Just be a good example to them and hopefully they will come around. Good luck... that's a tough situation. Crave the Quit! excuse me... I didn't mean "I was protecting my quit" I meant "I was protecting my addiction."

Good to hear it Neek!!! I told you - smokers watch quitters!!! That'll be great if you can get someone in the office to join you in quitting! Congrats on being a great example to follow! Way to go, Neek! Congratulations on a week quit. That is totally awesome. You should give your quit-interested coworker this site. Enjoy Rocky Pointe. You've earned it. :) Shevie My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/23/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 234 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,689 Amount Saved: $889.2 Life Gained: Days: 43 Hrs: 17 Mins: 3 Seconds: 53

Neek, Hold Strong and protect your quit. Friends would respect what you are trying to do. Take your own break and relax yourself. Josie ______________________ The SSC Support Team.
