A Far To Complacent Attitude Toward Quitting.....

18 years ago 0 189 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hmmm...i just read over what i wrote yesterday, and my point is somewhat unclear...that's what i get for trying to respond right before i left work for the day!! My point - if i still have to fight off the "just one" thoughts, even AFTER all that i have read and studied and prepared for, i can't even IMAGINE having the strength to go through this with NO plan in place! The cravings and thoughts and wants WILL come. No-one can fight them off but you. Cigarettes Not Smoked

I quit smoking on Feb.1st, cold turkey. I did this because I had enough of feeling guilty of putting my health at risk. My guilt was a long time coming. I smoked for 35yrs. That little voice in my head kept visiting me through time after time, till one day I simple had enough. I put out my cigarette and said aloud, "I am done". Right then and there I said aloud, " I am done". Jumped on the 'net', found this site, and the rest is history. This is the eve of my one year smoke free. The plan for me was this site, and of course, the 'want' to quit once in for all. Hey look, **** will happen every time you turn the corner, so there is no right time to quit. Only ready time to quit. Look at your situation in the eye...without the excuse to smoke. Just you. Have you ever felt how that might feel? I have. Let me tell you, very strange, but very liberating. I know there are a lot of people that decide on the spur of the moment to quit with no "preparation" and I don't want them to be discouraged. We all know that when you're debating whether to quit or not how easy it is to be influenced into waiting but sometimes we just need to strike while the iron is hot! I think we're all basically saying the same thing? I'm one of those that didn't "prepare". I woke up one morning and decided I wouldn't smoke for that day. However, I had to QUICKLY devise a "plan" on how to get through each trying moment. With my "plan" in place... I "prepared" for the next craving. Knowledge IS power with this process. Learning beforehand would be great...but if you wake up one day with that thought and you've not gotten that knowledge yet...then by all means...don't let that stop you. Dive in and get it along the way...but get a plan together...and be prepared. I think Bubba's main point was education will increase your chance of staying quit. If you haven't yet quit, learn about the addiction first and prepare. If you've already quit...it's not too late. Start your education now and you'll improve your chances of success! Everyone here will support you through all your trials whether you go the 'college degree" route or do 'on-the-job training'. Never quit quitting! Well then...if my thread made even one person rethink how they are going to handle moving forward, then I consider this a success. Please understand I get no satifaction out of seeing someone fail. It actually hurts because I feel the site, you and I could have done more. However, ones quit is ones quit. We can only hold hands. I will leave this alone now... As I peruse the thread headings here of late I see far to many of them that speak of... I am trying again... or something similiar. There is nothing concerning the quit that can be taken in a light vein. Oh, do not get me wrong, I and others here will support you if it is your 1,000th time to restart. I just want you all to take this adventure more seriously than I think some are. This is my xx time to quit, Back again, Remember me, etc... When a person gets here, it is to far into it to take it any other way but dead serious. I have read tens-of-thousands of posting on this site since I came here in Jan, 2002. I can tell you without hesitation, lack of preparation is the most reason folks fail at this. Why would someone subject themselves to the agony of quitting and not apply themselves to learn all they can about the dangers of smoking? This morning a cable news program had a piece on if a person should take a course on quitting prior to pulling the trigger. They said no. I say bull hockey. Knowledge is power. I was in a medical program about quitting for a month prior to starting. My medical program agreed to pay for the NRT (patches) for 12 weeks if we successful completed the sessions. It had me literally going mad to jump in and give it a try. It worked...I can tell you that 1,603 days later my pre-learning was paramount in my effort. Well then, now that I have shared all the useless information above, why don't we all make a pledge to redouble our effort to increase our knowledge and learn something new everyday about the evils of that junk. Thanks...Lindsey My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/10/2001 Smoke-Free Days: 1603 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 96,218 Amount Saved: $16030 Life Gained: Days: 330 Hrs: 21 Mins: 25 Seconds: 59

Very diplomatically put Jess! By way of concurrence with you on this point, I too had no preparation and certainly didn't look to the left of the screen which appears to be all the rage! I too quit cold turkey without any NRT (I was trying to rid my body of nicotine, not find an alternative delivery process) and I show no signs of failing. I am on day 623 now and yes, when you get to this stage you should still be guarded but you can afford to be a little cocky too! People say reward yourself and at this stage I find it tolerable to be happy with my quit! Good luck with your quit Jess, something tells me you have what it takes. Penitent d623

Nice post UFO and many congratulations for your one year quit today. You should be very proud. I know that it will appear elsewhere on the site today but for now take my best wishes here! And Joe, I think I know that friend of yours in the warehouse! Penitent, only 624 days.
