Bump for me. Sometimes we need to step back and see where we have come from. Sometimes I need to be reminded of what I have learned. Last night my 16 year old daughter was late home and violated her curfew. All the emotions made me want to smoke, but smoking would not help. When this stuff happened when I smoked, I would smoke cig. after cig. but I still was mad and scared the same as not smoking. I told myself that smoking would not make it any better at all and got through it. she was ok and now she's grounded so I don't have to worry about that again for a while. I don't understand how smoking covers emotions. I still felt them. As a matter of fact, it was soooo the same. but somehow we believe that it is going to help so we have a crave. Handling emotions ... no smoking crutch ... Your post made a lot of sense for the 'stage' I am at. I do not feel any resentment or bitterness, but I can relate to the rest. It has not been easy for me to deal with emotions in real time ... I am working hard on it though hoping I will get better at it as time goes on. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Lady, This was a great post! Mama & Chrisitian Girl, Ok here's 411 about smoking & emotions: Mama you're right smoking does cover up emotions in the sense that it provides a quick fix. When you were a smoker and you were stressed out or angry, you picked up a cigarette. Well, little did you know that fix of nicotine released a chemical reaction in your brain that made it release your happy chemicals. (That's why smoking made you feel better.) You then had the option of dealing with the problem or ignoring it completely. Now as a non smoker, you don't have a choice. The cigarette isn't there to diminish the stress or anger away so you have to deal with it in order for it to stop bothering you. Some people are different, some people need that break from the stress in order to feel the problem is manageable. This is how and when in your quit you start to develop new coping skills. A key component to the maintenance of your quit. Hope this shed some light, Danielle _____________________________ The SSC Support Team

This is so true. Once the bitterness is on its way out you stand a little taller - isnt that amazing?? It takes some getting used to, this seeing everything in a new light. I like it. Lady, This is an extremely powerful post and filled with truth. As one moves along with their quit, they are faced with "What to do with myself" now that myself is all there is to deal with. Raw emotions that cannot be snuffed out by cigarettes. The way we react to stress/situations must be re-learned. The old way of smoking our way through problems is gone and the new way of coping must be created. Gradually, and only through acceptance of your "new" self and your quit do you find the PEACE to face situations head on. One of the hardest things to do early in your quit is to find what fills your time that is beneficial to you, this is all the time that you used to smoke! Like trying to cope through cravings isn't enough! Try to embrace the newfound time to do whatever makes you happy. Breathe through your craves. Lady is correct in saying that it's through the "ME" time and ME activities that you find yourself and contentment with your quit. It's a gradual transition, but one more step toward a positive, happy non-smoking YOU. All of these thing take a lot of patience. Quitting is a total learning process. Make yourself available to learn from others here and listen to yourself too - you may be surpised at what you hear. Keep up the great quit all ..... Cigarettes Not Smoked

BTW..... I really and truely believe that "some" have an easier quit than others for two reasons.....first I believe that the longer you smoke the harder it is to quit compared to someone who has only smoked for a few years.Yes adiction is addiction, but that seems to be the case for all I've met through the years, that are trying to quit. Number two, I also believe that those who have a so called normal life and have never had to deal with past demons on a regular basis such as me which include child abuse, sexually and mentally, also have an easier quit. Each person has their own quit and what I seem to deal with, other's here would never understand or begin to understand. It's a never ending mind game. Each time my own child reaches a certain age, I then recall what I was like at their age and all the horrid memories come crawling back. I have 4 children ages 18, 16, 15 and 11 and have never told any of them of my past as a child. But as I mentioned each time a certain birthday comes for my own children, I can't help but think of what I went through at their age and how lucky they are to be ia so called "normal" family. None of my children smoke or drink and thanks be to God for that. But I often wonder what they would think about hteir Mom if they knew about my past??? Dealing with the bitterness and letting go of the past is something I've struggled with all my life. I have, however forgave those who have hurt me in my past and have tried my darnest to move on but like I said when one of my own reach a new age such as when my son turned 16, the memories come flooding of my past and how horriffic it was for me. I then try to surpass those feelings by thinking good thoughts, like how great I have been as a Mom to my own children etc., but when I'm alone, all I can think of is how bad it was for me as a child growing up and how bad it still is to have a MOM still living who still doen't care about the child she brought into this world. I also know that smoking is some sort of coping device for me to overcome all the emotions inside of me, yet when I quit smoking for 3 months, I feel great about myself, feel healthier and more energetic, until out of the blue my own Mom decides to say something to throw me into a depressed state again and that turns me back

Lady, Thank you so much for this post. It hit me personally. I am the exact same way. This emotional roller coaster is by far the hardest for me. Learning to deal with raw emotions can be tricky. Thank you again. ;) 4my2girls What Consumes Your Thoughts Controls Your Life My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 98 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,954 Amount Saved: $320.46 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 22 Mins: 12 Seconds: 34
