I and my brother mostly like the same kind of music.

If I'm sad, sad music is my kind of music is nice. When I'm not sad, any rock is my choice. Well... I do have some artists I prefer though. Disturbed, SOAD, Black Eyed Peas, Skillet.

Music is very important to me. I find a magic in music - such an articulate form of communication/art but at the same time intangible, somehow mysterious. I have many favourite artists across a range of styles - including but not limited to free jazz, 'straight' jazz, metal, hip hop, weird noisy Japanese psychedelia, blues and country. It all depends on my mood, and how I seek to set my mood, what I will listen to. Sometimes I like music that sounds/feels like the artist has ripped open my chest, looked into my heart, and turned the hurt and chaos into sound. The strange beauty that can be found in that sort of cacophony is reassuring, energising. Other times I may just want to relax, or feel my body respond, or appreciate musical expertise, or need to swim in a more tranquil form of beauty. Music can do all this for me. And there are those special pieces of music that are inextricably linked to a particular time or emotion or event in my life - maybe good, maybe bad, but usually intense. 'I Giorni' by Ludovico Einaudi, that was playing on my car radio as I drove home from the hospital the night my father died, the tune by Rachel Sweet that was playing when I had my first - ahem - rewarding amorous encounter, kicking back with my best friend at university and playing 'air guitar' to the version of 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' on the Stones' 'Love You Live' album, grinning from ear-to ear and knowing life just couldn't get much better......

I play the guitar, but not to any great level of expertise, which frustrates me at times. I want to be able to move with my music, as so many others move me, and I feel musicianship is a God-given gift. I play the blues, and yearn to make my guitar sing like Stevie Ray Vaughan or Johnny Winter or Joe Bonamassa. One day those strings may channel my soul. That would make me happy.

It depends on my mood.  If I need to have that emotional release (which are a bit more controlled now).  I listen to sad songs.
I can listen to any kind of music - I have my favorite artists but they are from lots of different genres.  I just love music. oh, all except the classical music and for some unknown reason it makes me anxious.
Some of the songs just pacify me, some make me wanna dance (by myself, in my house with the curtains drawn), some just lift my spirits.  I do the dancing - hey, if I'm so moved - it's exercise - a bonus!

Great discussion topic!

Members,
How does music make you feel? What different types of music help you?

Hi Loki
I like what you wrote.  I don't know why you'd say you aren't everyone - if you are logged in - you are part of everyone and welcome to everyone!
Music is very instrumental (pun) in effecting my mood.  Sometimes those sad gloomy ssongs help me to feel through things and sometimes I need more up-tempo, shake my booty type of songs (giving away my age with that statement).  Anyway, I think music - whatever kind - is a therapy in itself.  It's not important why we like something, we either do or we don't.

But speaking of things I do like - it is what you typed at the end.  "It's not about being strong enught to  fight it, it's about have the willpower to do what's needed".  That says I just have to break it down in to manageable steps that I CAN do.
I'll hang that one on the refrigerator Loki.

Hello. Although I don't count as everyone, I am a part of it, and feel like I should answer.

I am doing OK, I guess. My depression is more temporary than I believe most cases are, but it never stops coming back later. I guess I should listen to other kinds of music... I don't know why, but I like those gloomy sad songs (Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Green Day, Lonely - Akon, stuff like that). I guess it makes me feel less alone in my depressed state. I don't pretend to be an expert at psychology, I honestly don't know why I like that kind of music. All I can do is guess.

Remember, the people on here will do their best to help you, so don't give up. It's not about being strong enough to fight it, it's about having the willpower to do what's needed. Or, that's my view on it. I'm no expert.

Hi Windsy!

Thank you for the update.  It is nice to hear you sounding better.  Good for you for taking some time for yourself.  You seem to be a very responsible and driven person and that is great that you are using those attributes to find what you need.  I am also glad to hear that your family is being more supportive.  That must be very encouraging for you.  It sounds like you have a lot of plans and that is great!  What are you going to be doing to relax and reflect? Anything in particular?

Hi Everyone:

How is everyone doing, I hope fine.  I had a setback last week, but I am going
to take time to relax/rest and reflect and take care of windsy. Windsy was just
exhausted and needed recharging of batteries, and didn't realize it. Thanks for
all the encouragement and support, I appreciate that so much. My school has
been very supportive, and has said I will always have a job at this school.

I have questions I would like answered, and I am going to organizations this
week that can help me.  My family is starting to be more supportive, and
they are willing to support me.  Also, I have this site, which I thank you for
so much. My shrink is supportive to the idea of my family meeting with him
and me in December.  They want to help me but they don't know how, as
there was "no problem" in their eyes, now it is different.

I am going to do my own research, and look for alternatives for me.
I have started, and I am going to my city's mental health assoc this
week.  This is what I would hope the agency would have done, before
they terminated therapy.  I guess everyone makes mistakes and looks
in hindsight, as my pdoc wishes we did things differently.

I am beginning to understand that things happen for a reason.  I found
that reason, my pdoc will be working with me more, and I will find an
experienced therapist. I am on the road to recovery from depression,
and I am beginning to believe it is okay to reach out to resources to
say "I need help". I am being proactive in my therapy care.

I have done 2 goals in the next 3 weeks and I broke it all down, just like
I learned on this site & cbt. I also am going to use my thought records
and figure out my distortions and try to change my way of thinking.

Incidentally, my shrink was out of town, but I sent him an email.  He was
very nice and understanding, we tried something that helped so much.
I see him Nov 12/09, BUT in January he is going to South Africa for 4
months.  I will have supports put in place before he goes, and I will
pay attention more to warning signs. Also, I hope to have a new
therapist by then, and if not, I will always be okay. I know I am
not alone, as I have people that care like this site.

I have struggled with having  depression, and being recognized as
a person with a mental illness. Do other members have the same shame
& guilt, because we have depression b/c of an imbalance of chemical
in our brain.  I am going to start a new thread.  Have a great week
moderators, and members and think positively as it is the negative
thoughts that get us into trouble....Windsy
