I get what you mean, it would be nice to be able to just forget about it till it gets to that! But I am sure you will get through it ok. And as you said, it is better not to become a statistic! But I get your fears. As I said though, I have done many echos of the breasts and it really always went better then I expected. I know it is little comfort to you but I thought I would let you know my experience with it. Hang in there!

Sorry about your bad experience with the mammogram.  Many women fear the pain, past experiences, and the results, hence neglect getting one.  It is helpful to have someone accompany you to appointments for support and advocacy if things go awry for some reason or another. 

Stress is a normal part of everyone's life and there are healthy ways of dealing with it. You can change or avoid the sources of stress. You can change the way that you respond to stress and you can learn to relax by utilizing your stress plan!  

Answer the following questions to get started: 

  1. Name the biggest source of stress in your life?
  2. Is this source of stress short-term or long-term?
  3. How do you react to this source of stress?
  4. Is your reaction appropriate to the context?
  5. Is your reaction helpful to you in the long-term?
  6. What other reactions could you have to this source of stress?  

In question six, you are asked to choose an alternative behaviour. Your challenge this week will be to try it out. 

The next step of your stress plan includes methods of coping. Coping generally falls into five categories: 

  • Physical
  • Mental
  • Social
  • Diversions
  • Spiritual

Pick 2 for each category and rank on a scale of 1-10 the level of relaxation/stress relief this activity provides for you.  

The next time your stressor rears its ugly head, rate the level of stress you are experiencing and pick the corresponding numbered coping strategy.

If I could just put it on the next page of the calender and leave it be for a while I might be okay with it.  You know, put some perspective between me and it. 
BUT NO! IT IS A ZIT ON THE END OF MY NOSE NOW!
 
I can think of a million ways for it to go bad and one good (and burning the hospital will help no one).  Everything from the beauty-mark that might have left a tache to the scar from last autumn's car accident ... and for course all the nasty types of bitter torture-oriented ultra-sound techs that did not get prenatal exams duty they really wanted.

This is a stress-situation and This is a good time to Pratice some new tools you are giving in the Mod-corner.

My thoughts are with you.  If tests will get to the bottom and tell you specific results than think of them as positive with an outcome. You are a strong individual and we are here for you
 
Think onward and upward and make sure you treat yourself after the test, you do deserve some free time to yourself!

I am sorry to hear you are having to deal with something so tough for you. As furgitit pointed out it might be nothing but checking is the wisest course! 

If this helps, I have had echography or ultrasound of the breasts and have found it much more gentle then a mammography, in my case. But I get why you would hate medical exams.

That is too bad Wildcat, hopefully it is nothing.  It is scary and you are entitled to feel however you feel, scared or otherwise, this is your life and do not negate your need to have emotions in order to work through the difficulties.
 
I have a tendency to joke about breast cancer with my family and friends, they all have big breasts and mine are so small, there ain't no way they can squish them into any machine.  So chin up, breasts forward, up, sideways, down (wherever they may be) and be proud of who you are and be positive we will help you fight through this even from a distance.

they found a little something that needs to be checked out with an ultrasound.  I have an appointment may 20th.  And am in a panic.  I do not want to go through this again.  But I am scared sick of cancer (my father had Hodgkins and his sister had Breast cancer, etc). 
 
I do not want to admit that I hate to be poked and prodded and put into a position that makes me feel powerless, and takes me back to the abuse I lived with as a 3 years old.  But I do want want to be another statistic.

Wow that sounds like a horrible experience. That Lady sounds so rude! You would think she would understand how uncomfortable mammograms are! I am glad to see though that you took time for yourself to take care of yourself. 

Btw, I love Mercedes Lackey. I haven't read her in a while but I had started reading her Valdemar series. As soon as I can I wanna pick her up again. 

Anyway, I hope you have a great evening. Be good to yourself you deserve it!
