Medications

Cammy,

There are other things you can try other then meds to help you sleep.

Have you tried any relaxation techniques? Deep breathing exercises or stretching? It's been said that after 30 minutes and you're still unable to sleep, you should get up and clear your mind. Read a book for 20 minutes or a little television.

Members, do you have any suggestions?

I started a new med today.  Supposed to help me sleep as well.  I slept well for an hr+1/2 but woke up, is now 3 am, cant sleep.  Not sure what I can take because there are a ton of meds that react badly with this one.

Cammy, I agree the stopping and starting of meds is a horrible time for a person with a mental illness, it's like starting the battle all over again - back at square one.  The up side to that, is with all the knowledge we've acquired about our illness from this site and just living life help us get back on track once the new med takes effect.

Hang in there Cammy!  It does take a bit to get the right combination of medications.  And I agree with the others it's daylight and dark when you do find something that helps if even just a little bit!

hi cammy,
i take the generic form of effexor and it caused major problems last summer for me; rapid- cycling!  So the psychiatrist added topamax (that i take in generic).  I think next summer he will wean me off the anti-deperssants and hope i'lll be okay on a mood stablizer only... we will see!

But I so understand about the weaning.  When I miss a pill or even am a few hours late ... for the effexor  I am sick like a cat with a gross hair ball!   I hope the doctor will fine the right cocktail for you soon, there are so many possibilities and when you get the right one  it is like  and .

Hey Cammy,

Yes changing meds is a tough process. I am sorry to hear you are having to deal with that. Others here might have better advice to give you then I since I have not dealt with anti-depressants (except for stressing out about deciding if I will take them) in quite some time. I am sure others will come along who will have more insights on this. Hang in there!

I am going to have to change my meds once again.  My current med, (mirtrazapine) makes me eat way too much.  I have been coming down slowly, and I guess my feelings are starting to get bad again, not that I felt great when on the med.  I have been on 4 other meds now.  Effexor, I cant take anymore, it gave me permanent problems.  Wellbutrin,  I reacted very badly to it last spring,  extremely high bld pressure,  racing heart,   just couldn't take it.  Other meds that do work are not covered by gov't  drug benefits programme and are too costly for me to get on my own.  I'm hoping there is another one I can take.   Changing meds is miserable to begin with anyhow.
