Getting by.

So I have my time for my surgery. I weeded strawberries after the flowerbed. Then made lumber on my saw mill. Actually I supervised and Richard made the lumber. Next time he will bring Gus to help. It is a bit of work but makes nice lumber. A good day except Karin's computer is still using data somewhere that we don't know. It has cost half the cost of my computer in repairs and still has problems. I'm biased, I don't like PCs to start with.

I made the pie and it turned out good. Just uses pureed cooked carrots instead of pumpkin.
Went to town for more antibiotics and an oil change.
Too hot to make lumber so we will try in the morning when it is cooler.
I have to phone surgery booking too and get my time for Monday.
Lots to do, not enough time to do it.

Today I went to town even though I didn't want to. I guess you could call it exposure. I went to the pharmacy. In this little village it is in the Hospital right next to the lab and the doctors offices. Convenient you might say. They are always slow but even more so today so I went down to the nurses station and begged some Opsites (bandages) for the places I'm missing skin. They would rather give me bandages than do dressing changes. I had to get gas for my mill and fuel for my tractors and fill the car. Almost needed a mortgage. Had to get groceries too. Second mortgage :-)

I'm BBQing chicken on my porch where it is cooler. This is a lap top and I have WiFi so I can do this too. Having new potatoes and baby carrots from the garden to go with it. No salad, I'm too tired to pick.

It is muggy and looks like it might rain. My pumpkins are turning orange and my potato plants yellow. Some leaves are yellow and I'm not the only person whose Apples are starting to fall. Onions are getting yellow tops.

I was offered a free ticket to our Robson valley music festival. I don't really have time to go. I might if Karin wants to go.

I'd rather go fishing.

I have cataract surgery on monday. It is going to be nice to have that done. There is some anxiety of course but it is nothing. Just an inconvenient loss of a whole day. That is the second one now.
Tomorrow I want to make mock pumpkin pie out of last years carrots.

Chicken is done. Time to eat then water the garden and flower beds.

Well I have some more skin missing and some hematoma's but this is the last of the big boards. It is amazing that something that is noisy can be relaxing. It is probably because it is busy work and productive. And I like it. I certainly would not want to do it if I had too.
Looking like it might rain now. It just sort of drifted in from nowhere like panic sometimes does. The difference is that I like the sound of rain. And just like the rain I had to learn to accept panic before it could quit bothering me. It is though a lot easier to accept rain especially since we need it.
It was very nice sitting on my tiny deck with a cat and a cup of tea. It was very quiet. I'm on the old highway and only have one neighbour whose driveway is almost a quarter of a mile long. It was part of my land which I sold to them when I quit farming. They don't farm but have mules. I miss the smell of fresh cut hay. I'm still tired every evening in the summer and I sleep well except when it is too hot. Living here there is so much to be grateful for every day.
Thinking about banana loaf this evening. Maybe I should find the time to make a couple.

I wish I had a swimming pool. It is 85F in the shade, I hate to think what it is in the sun. I started sawing lumber at 9 this morning and three hours later I gave up. I did get some boards cut though. It is ironic that BC has a wealth of trees but you can not buy clear fir. (wood without knots). It gets shipped out of the country. As does all the number one wood. It is a matter of freight. It costs the same to ship a cheap board as an expensive one. Which doesn't explain why we sell logs instead of lumber. So if I want clear wood or odd sizes I have to cut it myself. I have a friend who sells picnic tables out of three inch clear cedar. For an unbelievable price. Supply and demand I guess.
Blood pressure is fine but my pulse was above the high limit. It is coming down but I better watch it. It is the heat. My pond that I pump out of is almost dry. My well will probably go pretty soon. Just waiting for that before putting in a new one, I hope we get some rain in Sept. so I don't have to water. Then I can complain about the rain. There is a breeze now so it is tolerable.
Why am I working in this? So I can go fishing when it cools. Even just get the boat out on a lake for a few hours. Maybe see if I can still swim.
Horse flies come with the heat. I got bit twice. Hard enough to bleed. Never did like them.

There is a connection between pain tolerance and anxiety. I'm far better in both cases than I have been in years. The pain clinic here uses anti anxiety and anti depressants when pain medication isn't working. I think CBT works just as well with less side effect. Easier on the liver and kidneys too.

Much as I don't want to I think of it I will clean house till it cools a bit outside. That could be many hours. It was almost dark yesterday before it cooled.

First I have to patch my leg where I took some skin off with a very heavy board. I'm clumsy with my Arthritis.

Those of you south of the border even those either side of the border must have a better tolerance for heat. Today it went well over 95F. I find it very hard to work in this temperature. Plants love it but I don't. Some like cabbage slow right down though. And I can't touch anything metal. Like a tractor. I can smell the hot rubber from the tires. It is still hot even on the porch on the North side of the house. That is where I have my BBQ for cooking on hot days like today. The next three days are supposed to be the same. I will have to press apple in the kitchen, it will be too hot on the deck. I like to do it on the deck because I can hose down the press after. It is a bit messy.
So BBQ chicken and new potatoes for supper. If I can get out of my chair. I must remember the sprinklers are on.

I don't sleep very good when it is this hot. I get grumpy.

Davit,
Apple Butter recipe
5 1/2 pounds apples ( peeled, cored and chopped)
4 cups white sugar
2 Teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon salt

Place apples in slow cooker/crock pot. Mix last 4 together in bowl and pour over apples. Cover and cook on high for 1 hour. Mix and reduce heat to low and cook for 9 to 10 hours stirring occasionally until it is thickened and dark brown.
Uncover and continue cooking on low for another hour. Spoon into sterile containers, cover and refrigerate or freeze. My recipe says it came from all recipes.

I'm making Banana bread today before the fruit flies take over my kitchen. I bought to many bananas. Should have 6-7 loafs by this evening.

JayDee

Yes I have. I freeze apples for pies, make apple sauce, crab apple jelly, apple pectin. Soft cider, hard cider and apple wine. Mostly it will be juice (soft cider) this year. I still have apples for pies in the freezer. On a good year I can get 40 or more five gallon, (six US gallon) pails of apples so I have been giving them to anyone who will pick them. My trees are twenty to twenty five years old. I used to dry apples also. Cut thin and soaked in lemon juice sugar water and cinnamon before stringing them up to dry. I may try apple chips this year. Oh and I make mince meat for Christmas with apples and green tomatoes. It is very good.
I would like your recipe for apple butter. I've never tried it in the slow cooker.

Davit.

Hot today but I'm going to roto till my new flower bed. It is in semi shade for plants that like that.
I was given some red cedar to make flower boxes this winter. I think I will be busy.

Davit,

Do you ever make Apple butter from your apples? I have a slow cooker recipe for it and just came across it. It can be frozen or canned. Just a random thought that occurred as I was going through my recipes. I remembered you saying something about having to many apples.

Sea breeze is a very good strawberry and produces the first year planted. It is a large plant and produces fruit up to an inch and a half across without losing taste. Ever bearing but they get smaller this time of year. We planted three varieties this spring but this is the only one that that had fruit.
T+T seeds has a sea weed concentrate fertilizer that works very good and doesn't stink or attract flies. A small amount of bone meal increases root production and fruit.
