New comer

Hi, I stopped smoking 12 days ago (Friday 25 Sept 2006), and have been using an NRT inhaler when needed. So far, I use only 1 cartridge (2 mg) a day. In addition, some day, I also use 1/4 of an NRT lozenge when the urge to smoke became too strong to bear !!! (I used a sharp knife to cut the lozenge into 4 small pieces!). So far so good, and I have some moments up and down ! I have been smoking for 35 years, and this is my 5th attempt to quit! I'm not a heavy smoker (10 cigs a day, on avegrage), but have found it very hard to quit ! I'm determined that I will succeed this time . I have been quietly readings messages at this website, and fount them very insightful and encouraging. Thank you, and plaese keep up your good work ! Cheers, nmc

when does it get better?

Martha, Thanks for the link to Duffis' article ! It's great ! I like this paragraph: -------------- NO, the cravings don't go away, but you suddenly can see them as a temporary thing, kind of like gas, that will pass... sometimes with a bit of a stink just to remind you that it really is a process of elimination of the toxic thoughts of an addict. You may experience a twinge of a craving for decades... so what? It is a FEELING... you don't have to ACT on it! And it soon passes. --------------- Cheers, nmc My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 13 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 130 Amount Saved: $65 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 10 Mins: 14 Seconds: 11

Coffee and Cig Craving

Hi, This is my Day 17, so far so good. Yesterday morning, I went to work . As it was still very early in the morning, I stopped by at a coffee shop, ordered a white coffee, and enjoyed it. Usually, I drank coffee with one or two cigarettes. This time, amazingly, I could enjoy my coffee without any urge to smoke! However, after dinner, I went to see a friend to help her installing a new software on her PC. As she offered a special coffee with very nice aroma, I suddently felt a strong craving for cigarette! The craving was terribly powerful ! Luckily, she's a non-smoker and there was no cigarette in her house ! So I endured that craving for a while, slowly breathed in and slowly breathed out ... watching my feelings and sensations ... and the craving gradually diminished ... As I was driving home, the craving for comfort re-appeared ... This time, I took my NRT inhaler and had 2 puffs ... It helped to calm me down ... So, the craving can appear in many forms, and I have to deal with it by many ways ... one day at a time ! Trying again...........

Hi green eyes, I have been smoking for 35 years, and this is my fifth attempt to quit ! I'm better prepared this time, psychologically, and with the great help of this SSC group (and I also use an NRT inhaler when the craving becomes unbearable!), I'm confident that this is my last attempt and I will succeed! Craving & deep breaths

Hi, I still have to deal with my "cravings for comfort" after nearly 3 wks ! While browsing old messages, I found a message by Stockport1 on "The Art of Deep Breathing" very helpful for me to overcome my craving ! Here is the extract: ----------- ... Place your tongue on the roof of your mouth and breathe in through your nose. keep breathing in until your lower stomach starts to rise. Then put your lips together as if you are blowing up a balloon. Blow all the air out slowly in a controled manner until it is all gone. The breathing out should take almost twice as long as the breathe in. ... -------------- You can read the whole message at: http://www.stopsmokingcenter.net/support/viewmessages.aspx?topic=31574&forum=12 Cheers, nmc My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 19 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 200 Amount Saved: $95 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 17 Mins: 5 Seconds: 53

Coffee and Cig Craving

Hi Josie, The craving comes to me in different forms. In general, it's "craving for comfort", not craving for cigarette! I felt agitated, irritable, uncomfortable, specially in the chest area ... Previously, when I smoked, I felt a pleasurable sensation in the chest area when I took a puff from the cigarette . Now, it seems I'm missing that pleasure, not the cigarette ! So, I'm trying different ways to cope: deep and slow breath (it helps greatly!), menthol lozenges, plenty of water, stretching exercises, brisk walking , ... and an NRT inhaler as the last resort (I use this inhaler only when it is necessary, when the craving becomes unbearable). In previous attempts to quit smoking, I tried Zyban, NRT gums, NRT lozenges, ... but I failed because that craving for comfort was too powerful to overcome by those methods! I did not try NRT patch because I was not a heavy smoker (10 cigs a day, on average), and thus, did not need constant supply of nicotine. This time, I think I'm better prepared, mentally, and I also come to know this support group (yes, thanks for your supports!) ... I'm more confident that I will succeed!
