Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Members,

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) occurs when anxiety manifests itself through persistent and uncontrollable thoughts (obsessions) or by the compelling need to perform one or more actions repeatedly (compulsion). Compulsions are usually related to the obsessive thoughts that individuals possess.

Obsessions tend to focus on:

- Fears (such as being contaminated by germs)

- Doubts (such as forgetting to lock the door)

- Impulses (such as hurting oneself or others).

Compulsions consist of actions such as:

- Cleaning

- Checking

- Actions that prevent impulses from occurring

Do you have any questions about OCD or similar behaviour patterns? Please ask, share your experiences or comment.

Challenging Social Anxiety

Members,

Last week we listed out the symptoms of Social Anxiety. Today, we will be talking about how to challenge social anxiety using the following techniques:

  • Thought records: Keeping a thought record implies writing down the negative thoughts you experience in social situations and challenging them using the 10 questions for challenging negative thoughts exercise posted below.
  • Exposure work: Exposing yourself to the phobia is key but slowly. This may involve having a friend come over for a short period of time, going out for a short period of time and increasing the level of perceived discomfort with each exposure. To help you along on a list from 1-10 write down the situations, people or places that would make you the least anxious to the most anxious. Next, devise a plan to move you through each level at a stage that is comfortable for you.
  • Communication skills: Don’t forget to review the way you communicate with others. This is helpful skill in any situation! Learning how to communicate with others will also allow you to engage others in conversation resulting in participation as opposed to monitoring your own negative thoughts.

Good luck! We now invite our members to ask questions!

I´m lost and can´t find my way back

Hi tdgirl,

First off, please know that we are here to help and listen, and will never judge.

I think you deserve a lot of praise.  It sounds like you have been working on your anxiety and have made great progress.  Setbacks are expected here and there, and they represent great opportunities to learn and grow.

Can you take anything away for this last situation that may be helpful moving forward?

Although you may have been missing for a little while you are back now!  Maintenance is a part of the program and sharing with us on the forums is a great way to stay engaged. Please keep on sharing.

It also sounds like your husband is there for support.  Sometimes we tend to think we can read the minds of our loved ones and may believe that they are thinking negatively of us.  Usually, our assumptions are inaccurate.  Talk to your husband about how you feel and that you want to deal with the present situation as a team.

Please share with us how everything is progressing.  We are here to help

Inspirational quote

"As you fall in love with yourself, you naturally get healthier. All the do’s and don’ts of health education can only build a house of straw unless love is the foundation. When you see love in operation in a relationship, you see trust, acceptance of the uniqueness of each person, understanding of differences, and forgiveness of failing."

Unexpected Cleaning Spree

Hi Sally,

Glad to hear you are working through the program.  While it might not be one of your goals, don't be too hard on yourself.

What are your goals and have you written them out?  While this may sound like a tedious task, writing your goals can keep you focused on them.

Take a quick glance at section 2: Goals and Activities and use the goal planner worksheet in your toolbox.

And please check in and let us know how it is going.
