My first reaction was that if I can get through next Christmas then I'll know I'm there!
Then I read all these other posts and they have made me think differently with each one. The last by Ki was good because she is absolutely right that there is a good feeling of success on a daily basis with the one day at a time approach.
Someone else mentioned an alcoholic and I also have that personal 'battle' going on. This summer will be three years without a drink and I still occasionally find myself in situations when I think 'Now is the time I would have had a drink'. Not really 'I want a drink'. So I hope to achieve the same level of objectivity with smoking and - to some extent - I feel I have.
I will feel happier though when maybe a whole day passes without even one stab of expectation of a cigarette and then the thud of disappointmnt when I have to remind myself that it is not an option any more.
Good talking point Lainey.

Mixed news from me. I'm back in contact but have had to come to the local library to make it. Missed my month celebration because computer died and now can't get Mr. Ed's posts to come up so I can join the other 28thers in celebrating.
Am only here for a little while to check in because I was having withdrawal symptoms on top of the 'usual' smoking ones.
Did anybody miss me???? Am going to check out a few posts now and hope someone might be on line and answer me back now.

Yes Lainey, you are right about the accessability of cigarettes and, of course, the signs of having consumed too much alcohal are harder to cover up than those of cigarettes. I mean you can keep up a smoking addiction much more easily than you can a drinking one because, after a while, with drink you do start to fall over and the like.
Speaking from experience, the two quits are different. Not one easier than the other but just as hard. Today I've been having slight palpitations of panic and know that either a drink or a cigarette would help but then realized it was also because I hadn't been able to access this site for a few days! So I'm in the public library getting my fix and hopefully when I emerge, blinking, into the sunlight I will be a calm and reasonable person with no need for the moment of either crutch. Having said that, I haven't had a drink for 3 years and now don't really consider it any option.
Don't yet have the same confidence with nicotine.

WHITE RABBITS TO YOU TOO
Have been lost in a computerless state. Mine died on me and so I have come to the local library for a bit of a fix and hope someone might catch this before I have to sign off. Should be back in business at home from Thursday with fingers crossed.
You know that firm that advertises all the time where people go in all smiling and are served really quickly by people who quote all sorts of computer speak to them and then sell them, instantly, the computer they want. Then you see the customers emerge with said computer in a nice shiny box - still smiling. Well. It's all nonsense. I spent TWO HOURS in one of their stores yesterday and emerged with a plastic carrier bag with bits in and a receipt for a machine with isn't available till Wednesday.
Hope you are OK. Doing well boy. Speak to me.

Excuse me gatecrashing Mt Ed but why can't I get the stats list thing for the 28th to come up on my screen?
I am only on here for a short time and I missed my birthday on the 28th because my computer is broken and, in fact, dead but now that page won't come up. Just wondered if you can come back to me now and speak to me to reassure me that eberyone IS still out there.
Thank you.

Hi Kev
Great to hear from you. Doing well. If naming things is what it takes then I'll think of something and tell you later.
Good luck and keep chewing.
