Topic: What do you tell your children about your addiction?

The have seen me sneak out for buying more booze, observed my drinking at home and at parties. So, I nothing to hide from them. But seven years into recovery, they have seen me change. My 11 year old son knows what we do at the AA meetings today. Few years earlier he thought, its kind of a bar where we do controlled drinking (LOL). My family today is very supportive of me taking time out of my regular life to go out and help other alcoholics who are still out there. Its all about balance, they know that I need this for the rest of my life.

My children (4, from 15 to 25) have already observed that I drink too much.  I tell them the same thing as I tell my friends -- "I'm not drinking because it hurts me too much". I cannot stop them from going down the same road.  I can only try to teach broad principles -- be honest, do your best, act with integrity, make time for your family and friends.  And some specific behaviours such as never drink and drive.  John

Do you come clean about your previous history?
Do you lie?
How do you approach the subject?
How do you keep them from going down that same road?
