Day 5, Coughing at night so badly

5 years ago 0 796 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi MaggieMay,
Welcome to the site. CONGRATULATIONS on being a quitter for FIVE days already!!  That's an awesome start to your quit journey. Yes your coughing is normal. Sometimes you cough so much and so hard your stomach and back muscles start hurting. It's all a part of your bodies healing process. It's trying to expel all those poisons that have accumulated in your lungs from smoking. Having a cold on top of quitting I'm sure doesn't help matters any either.  If you are concerned about at, and it doesn't get better soon, you might want to check with your doctor just to be safe.
As for a natural way of helping to clear your lungs, you might want to try this.
Deep breathing phase: slow controlled deep breath, breath in and hold for 3 seconds, exhale slowly, repeat 3 times.
Huffing phase: take a medium breath in and hold for 3 secs then open mouth wide and Huff the air out fast (as if steaming up a mirror) repeat 3 times.
Take a deep breath in, hold, then HUFF out long and hard just once.
Cough phase: lean forward and cough.
Hope this helps you.
Best wishes on your quit journey, and stay strong!

Hi all,

I'm on Day 5 of my first cold turkey attempt. I haven't slept in days because my coughing is so bad at night. Is this normal? I'm literally hacking my lungs out, feels like I'm doing more harm to my body than good. I don't want to take cough medication anymore as I don't think it's very healthy for my liver. Any tips to naturally help with the coughing?

(Note though: I have had a cold since last week, so it kinda prompted me to stop smoking and the coughing got worse so it made me not want to smoke even more. I'm so exhausted. I  just want to sleep!)
Thanks,
Sleepless (but not in Seattle)
