What is Xanax like?

Hi Carmela, I too just wanted to echo what Mike said about contacting your doctor- especially when it comes to medications. Regarding your question about an internist - most people start with their family doctor, who in turn may arrange for follow-up through a counsellor or other type of mental health specialist if they felt this was necessary. There are actually some great tools available on this site that you may find helpful to use at your medical visits regarding experiences of anxiety/panic. About your question for 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan)- I was sure that this topic had been discussed on our site before, but I was unable to locate it using the search feature. I would suggest that this too is something to discuss with your health care provider. Casey _____________________________ The Panic Center Support Team

What you described sounds like a panic attack. Click on the link in the list on the left that says "What are panic attacks". There may be answers for you there. There is good information on this site. Read it and then talk to your doctor. Mike

Carmela, Please contact a physician for the answers to your questions. I am not comfortable with the level of advice you are looking for. Best of luck to you.

Mike! Well, May 1st of this year, I had a weird experience and had to call 911. I was driving to work one day(remembering thoughts in my head:afraid to get in another accident!) Suddenly, I felt weird;light-headed, heart pounding- couldn't breath, dry mouth, jittery, very scary. Ambulance came, checked sugar level, etc., took me to the ER, and everything came out fine. Urine test, EKG, more blood test. They told me it was anxiety! So, from then, i've been worried about it since! Does that sound like anxiety to you? What kind of doctor should I go to? And why couldn't you just go back on Xanax? write soon! Carmela
Why did you quit Xanax cold turkey?
I went on vacation one week and forgot to take them with me so I just decided to stop taking them. I was fine for 2-3 days but soon after it was not nice. I immediately made an appointment with my GP and requested a Xanax to Klonopin withdrawal program. (I did a buch of study on how to stop taking Xanax, Klonopin substitution was by far the preferred method.) Are you sure you have Anxiety? You will need to get a diagnosis to confirm, I would guess a psychiatrist/psychologist would be the proper authority for an anxiety evaluation. Mike

Mike! Why did you quit Xanax cold turkey? ANd why are you taking a different med now? Have you and anybody on this group tried 5HTP? It's a natural herb you can take? I'd like to find me a different doctor. Do you think an Interneist is the best way to go for Anxiety? Carmela

Xanax will simply take the edge off the anxiety. It may also make you sleepy and lethargic, it WILL reduce your anxiety. Depending on the dose you should be able to function wile taking Xanax...I did for 2 years. The doctor will need to get you on a dosage that stops the anxiety and still allows you to function. This may take some experimentation. I too just switched from Xanax to Klonopin with no bad side effects. I had tied to stop Xanax (after 2 years of use) clod turkey...that was not a good idea. I doubt that the symptoms you experienced after stopping the Buspar on the 4th day were actual physical withdrawl symptoms. Most likely you got worked up mentally and allowed that to mess with you. Id check with the doctor to be sure. Xanax is just like any other drug in that it has good and bad points. It saved me more times than I can count. I'd have a conversation with your physician and follow their advice. Good luck. Mike

Hi Kathy! Thank you for the advice. I still don't see how this medication is going to end up in my mouth! It just won't happen. How did Xanax make you feel? I took Buspar before for 3-4, and it was ok. But, I quit taking it on the 4th day, and I think I did have weird withdral's, it was terrible. I know they say it's not long enough for it to work already, but the things I was feeling was unreal. That's why i'm scared... HELP ME>>>>>>>>>> :8o:

Hi Carmela, My best advice to you is to discuss with your physician your concerns regarding this medication. For me personally, I can tell you that it has been a godsend and yes, if you were to stop it suddenly, you would probably end up in withdrawal. HOwever, recently, my doctor switched me from xanax to klonipin and he did it VERY gradually so that I really never noticed the change. I also still use xanax for "breakthrough" anxiety and it has been an absolute godsend for me. I understand being afraid of trying a new medication....I can be terrified of putting anything in my mouth that even resembles a pill....lol. You could also start with a really small dose and then go from there depending on your comfort zone. Good luck and let us know how you make out! kathy
