Many unhealthy habits, such as lack of physical activity, poor sleep hygiene, an unbalanced diet, and excessive screen time, start in childhood and continue into adulthood, leading to long-term health problems. Screening for these behaviors, withbrief interventions to improve them are beneficial and cost-effective but are not widely implemented in pediatric practice. Our goal is to adapt the existing RIPPLE tool, which screens for behaviors contributing to pediatric obesity, to include sleep and screen time, and to engage families as partners in primary care. The tool will include screening, a brief intervention, and referral to resources.
Step 1: Screening
Parents will complete a short tablet questionnaire evaluating their child`s physical activity, sleep, eating habits, and screen time.
Step 2: Brief Intervention
After screening, parents will receive immediate feedback and educational materials to help change unhealthy behaviors, with results shared with clinicians.
Step 3: Referral to Resources
Parents will receive a list of resources tailored to each behavior and age group, which they can select and receive via email.
