Congrats Dave on your 9th month AF. Great accomplishment and a true inspiration to us all.

That's great mcaodha. You're making a lotos positive progress. Great work! We seem to be very much aligned in how we're approaching the process of moving past this challenge. As to the blog link, it should be right underneath my picture of the forest on the left where it says "My Blog Click to view". If you don't see it then you've logged into a slightly different version of the site, which seems to use the same forum but has different access rights. I discovered this when I linked to it from "http://camh.alcoholhelpcenter.net/Default.aspx" rather than "http://www.alcoholhelpcenter.net". It's quite odd. The Centre for Mental Health and Addiction appears to have a version of the site with restricted access and you don't see the blog. Maybe the admins (Ashley?) can shed some light on this. If you can't see the Blog settings you can re-register on http://www.alcoholhelpcenter.net and it should appear. I hope that isn't to confusing for ya!

I tend to agree on AA. Some need it and really embrace it, others like myself don't. Different strokes for different folks.

All the best!

Dave
for me in the beginning it was my husband and kids, and finding this site, being able to associate with others, which also allows me to ask questions,be honest, be afraid, be doubtful and wavering in strength, only to then find the support, encouragement, the challenge to look at questions that are put back to me when needed.
Now its the site, along with feeling so much better physically (even lost weight!), being much clearer in my head, better able to cope with day to day challenges, and an overall feeling of well being. The Mindfulness training has complemented all of these.
While I respect AA does it for some people, and there are aspects of it that I take, such as the one day at a time, I have no real desire to attend meetings and align myself to an organisation, too many memories of my parents relationship with it.
What I think I need is to stick with going forward is this site and regular postings, keep up the mindfulness and continue to learn from others success such as yours.
without showing my lack of IT skills too much!! how do I access your blog?
Wishing you continued success Mcaodha

Hi mcaodha,

That's a great question and it was a great exercise to review it and consider what has been successful for me personally. I started writing and got a little long winded so I posted it on my blog rather somewhat repeat myself and create a somewhat disjointed response (posts break up after a certain amount of word).

FYI, I'm looking forward to pursuing the mindfulness training you mentioned. I found quite a few resources in my area. Thanks bringing the topic forward!

What have you found is working best for you?

Best regards,

Dave

Thats great Dave and very encouraging to those of us who are aspiring to do the same. What are the main factors/influences that you would say contributed to your success?

Just rolled over into the 3rd quarter (9 months of no drinking, 8 months no smoking). If I can do this you can do this too.

Thanks cpt,

I'm really happy that you find it helpful. I'm going to add it to my blog here so I can keep it updated and consolidated. Please add to this thread as you progress through this journey. We're pretty synced up as far as the day of the day when we both quit, along with Lisa Dawn, so let's all push forward on this ride together! Thank you for the positive feedback.

Best regards,

Dave

Dave I am so glad I found this post - your story and honesty about the process is inspiring and reassuring. I am sure I will have challenging moments, and it will help to reread your post at that time! (And reach out to peeps on this forum, of course.)

Lisa, hi again. And high-five on day 2 sista ;) I also have anxiety issues. I don't know if alcohol let it those issues or vice versa, maybe both! If you don't mind me asking, what treatment have you gotten? I am off to see a therapist on Thursday for the first time in years. I don't want the anxiety (and sometimes depression) to lure me into a relapse.

Hi LisaDawn,

Thank you for the support and the kind words! Very much appreciated. More than that though, I am sincerely humbled and grateful that I could have helped you in some small way. I hope we can share ideas and progress the topic so it will benefit anyone else who needs help and support in over-coming this challenge of alcohol abuse. I couldn't agree with you more on your observations and how you are approaching this challenge right now and I'm looking forward to hearing more of your insights on the topic. Definitely keep posting as I have found it to be extremely helpful. This site has been a key factor in getting past a problem that has been affecting my life since I was a child. Now I'm in the "untangle the ball of string" stage, so to speak, which you describe and I'm quite enjoying it. It is very liberating and empowering. I look forward to future discussions!

Best regards,

Dave

I am just coming back to this site and saw Dave's post. Congratulations Dave on all your successes. I have been having some alcohol but want to have a period of abstinence or a complete quit. Dave helped me when I had tried to quit before. I had to get some help with some issues that I had so I would not tie them to alcohol. Alcohol is a problem for me at times but I am much happier and in touch with myself and those negative voices in my head are starting to be turned into positives. Quitting before though made me realize that I had some issues that were not tied to alcohol but that I used it as a coping mechanism for those issues. So I haven't been doing that so much anymore but now I want to get healthy. Quitting alcohol does not solve your problems but it makes them much more obvious. So now that I have recognized them I have a fighting chance at quitting alcohol with more tools as the anxieties arise. It is really hard to face anxieties on your own without help. So I went for the help. Here's to day one. I will post everyday to keep me on track. Lisa
