Just wanted to say hi

foxman - thanks for your reply.  yeah, that is me - I totally crave drinks after the first one.  It's funny, since I joined up with this group, I've been afraid of alcohol.  My wife had a glass of wine yesterday and I just couldn't join her - I'm scared of any drinks.

Unfortunately if you are an alcoholic, the chances of social drinking is out of question. There is a phenomenon called craving, which forces an alcoholic to look for another drink, once he/she puts the first drink in the body. And more. Hence an alcoholic ends up drunk. Some people do not have this physical craving. They can always walk away by taking a drink or two.

I'm awesome at rewarding myself - do it all the time for no good reason.  But in this case, since I love my kids, love triathlon, I'll use my free nights this week to play with my kids and go for a run, bike or swim.

Thanks for your support Ashley.  Really helps.

I think that is a great goal.

I also have to commend you for avoiding the possible binging trigger with work.  Avoid these types of situations until you are more confident in your cut back.

How will you be rewarding yourself for avoiding this situation?

foxman - good question.  I guess ideally I would want to never binge again.  I would like to be able to drink socially - a couple of drinks - but so often 1 or 2 leads to another 10 or so.  I'd welcome your thoughts if you've been faced with those choices before.

ashley - i think it's both should and want.  I've always known I shouldn't be drinking the way I do, and now I really want to finally stop abusing alcohol.  I have a conference next week out of town.  Normally that would lead to 3 or 4 nights of binging with my friends from work.  I know if I'm in that environment, I have no chance of controlling myself.  So I'm commuting 2 hours each way every day instead of staying overnight.

I love a good glass of wine, or a good beer, or scotch, or vodka, I really like it.  What I want is to be able to have 1 or 2 and stop.  Maybe for abstinence is the only route.  I dunno.

I am glad you are excited about your new life Scott! What specifically are you looking forward to?

Be sure to work through the program to arm yourself with all the information you need to battle this.

One word stuck out to me when I was reading your post "suppose", "I supppose I have to admit I have a problem."  This made me a little concerned because suppose sort of sounds like a should and when you are cutting back on drinking because of a should and not because of a want it can be difficult.  What are your thoughts on this?  What do you really want?

So are you planning on abstaining from binge drinking or controlling your binge intake?

I'm 40, great family, great job, great life except for the drink.  I suppose I am a binge alcoholic.  I don't drink every day - probably 2 times per week on average, but when I do, I basically drink as much as I can.  Blackouts galore, brutal hangovers and I stop being a reasonably bright, nice person and become a complete idiot.

So, after 20 years of this, I suppose I have to admit I have a problem.

One problem I have is that EVERY friend I have drinks about the same.  A lot of drinking friend (work and personal) triggers.

Anyway, had 15 drinks Tuesday night, nothing the last two nights.  I'm on a roll...

I'm excited about my new life.

Scott
