Hello Bern,

Good for you for trying to stop and succeeding for at least 11 days.

I've learned something about friends and booze. You don't lose your real friends when you try to quit drinking but you might lose your drinking buddy which might not be a bad thing after all

We are unable, at certain times, to bring into our consciousness with sufficient force the memory of the suffering and humiliation of even a week or a month ago.

...or even last night

"I also experience the forgetting how bad I felt and giving in once again to craving."

There is a very important paragraph in the book called Alcoholics Anonymous:

The fact is that most alcoholics, for reasons yet obscure, have lost the power of choice in drink. Our so called will power becomes practically nonexistent. We are unable, at certain times, to bring into our consciousness with sufficient force the memory of the suffering and humiliation of even a week or a month ago. We are without defense against the first drink.

Junebug,

Thank you for your postings.  I can relate to everything you are saying.  I also experience the forgetting how bad I felt and giving in once again to craving.  After the first drink I know exactly how the whole thing will play out and yet I do it over and over.  Putting my hand back on that hot stove thinking this time it won't hurt!  Crazy thinking huh?  It helps to know I'm not so different and maybe I too can change and live the life I deserve to live!

June,

Welcome and know that you have made the first step, good for you!  This can be difficult, but it is doable!

There are lots of members that do know where you are coming from and they can share their experiences.  Samantha has offered some great assistance "Take a look at your toolbox under Dealing with Difficulties and then Dealing with Desires. This section will touch upon ways that others have used to deal with strong urges, desires or thoughts".

Begin your journey with knowledge and preparation.  Use the tips and tools to help guide you through each and every day.

This a great first step!

Even I used to be quized about not being able to stop after I took that a drink or two. Later after a bit of struggle came to the awareness this is something unique to Alcoholics. There is something physical craving that happens after an alcoholic puts a drink in the body. But that is not the only issue with the alcoholic, after a few days of abstinence, the mind tricks him/her into believing that it will be alright this time and we pick up the first drink. And during that absence, the alcoholic is very miserable: restless, irritable, discontented, remorseful, depressed........

The only solution is to have a total psychic change so we can have different out-look upon life.

Hello

i a new to tis and am very emotional right now. i have been struggling with drinking for about at least 10 years. as a teen it was the popular thing to do  and the drunker you were the cooler it was and  that turned into my bad habit that till this day i cannot kick. i am a binge drinker . i used to drink every night and now have cut it down to a couple of nights a month but when i go out its like i make up for lost time . i really hate it . i have decided today i am going to have to quit altogether because in my world there is no such thing to have just one drink..having just one drink is the hardest thing to do.
