TCA (amitriptyline)

Hi, Thanks for the reply Lance.

I have been praying for you during this tough time and for you find the clarity, hope and strength within yourself to help you through this period of loss.

I'm also on effexor but when I was in hospital I was supposed to be put on amitriptyline, and as I am still having a bit of trouble with sleep - waking up early in the morning and not getting back to sleep. So I was just wondering how the TCAs compare.
Has anyone tried other sleeping aids?
Does anyone know why depression causes people to wake up in the middle of the night and early morning?

In Australia psych drugs are all on the PBS so their prices are limited to around $30 a month and I think as low as $4-5 for concessions. So thankfully insurance and pricing isn't a problem for me. Avoiding any potentially inflammatory discussions relating to the current American health reform, but I hope that the system changes such that people are not denied essential medications and they are not priced out of reach.

i know we are all different and so are the meds. Recently I was on Mirtazipine which causes some of the same side effects as the TCA's. I slept and ate and craved different foods. The PDOC wanted to try a TCA and after a lot of reading I asked to go back on Effexox, which I had been on in the past. I went off due to a different side effect, no insurance and no money. (a bad side effect) I went back on and found a way to get it (legal)  and I was a super good move. So, good luck, hope this helps.
