Confused if it's Anxiety/Stress/Depression

Hello Doreen,

It can be hard to stay positive and not think negative, it takes a lot of work to catch these thoughts  and change them into positive thinking. I also agree with Davit, you seem to have a lot on your plate, so not sure if what you are experiencing is Anxiety / Stress / Depression or rather a combination of all three.

When you do have negative thoughts you should challenge them. Try asking yourself these questions:

1. Is it "true"?
2. How do I know it’s true?
3. Is it 100% true? (remember something that is 75% or 99% true is
    not 100% true)
4. What's the evidence for it being true?
5. What’s the evidence against it being true?
6. Has it ever happened before?
7. What's different now?
8. If it were true, how bad would it really be?
9. What's the worst thing that could happen?
10. If the worst thing happened, how bad would it really be?

You might find that these thoughts are not true at all, which may help you think more positively.

Let us know if this helps, and come back often to let us know how you are doing.

Experiences with agoraphobia

On Tuesday we talked about panic disorder, its characteristics and physical symptoms. People experiencing panic disorder may also develop agoraphobia, which arises form the worry that further panic attacks might occur. Agoraphobia causes a person to restrict their normal activities in an extreme way – they tend to avoid public places, such as shopping malls, public transit or restaurants for fear that another panic attack my occur. In some cases, home may feel like the only safe place to be therefore reducing ability to function in the outside world.

What have your experiences been with agoraphobia? Do you have any questions that we can help you with?

Feeling stressed? Have a laugh!

Members,

Laughter can be just what the doctor ordered. Did you know that laughter has both short term and long term positive health effects? In the short term laughter can stimulate your organs, activate and relieve the stress response, soothe tension and stomachaches and in the long term it can improve your immune system, relieve pain and also increase personal satisfaction.

Find out more by reading the article below:

Mayo Clinic. Stress relief from laughter? Yes, no joke. Available online <http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/stress-relief/SR00034> February 9, 2010

Hello

Jimmy,

Glad to see that you are challenging those thoughts. It's good that you are writing those thoughts down and challenging them on paper, this way you can really see what is going on in your mind. Have you thought about keeping a journal? Or updating the blog on this website once in a while, it can be a helpful tool to help you move forward.

Come back often and let us know how you are doing.

10 Questions to ask your health care provider

Members, are you thinking about talking to your doctor about your panic disorder? Not sure where to start, or what kind of questions to ask. Here are some ideas that could be useful.

1.    What tests or evaluations should I expect that will confirm the diagnosis of a panic disorder?
2.    What is your experience treating others with panic disorder?
3.    Do you suspect that I may have any other emotional disorders besides panic disorder?
4.    How can I be proactive and reduce the overall impact that panic disorder can have on my life?
5.    What are my treatment and medications options?
6.     How effective are these options? What are some of the potential side effects?
7.    What are some ways to prevent or deal with panic attacks that are associated with panic disorder?
8.    Should I be thinking about therapy? If so, can you recommend a qualified therapist?
9.    Is there a genetic base for panic disorder? Could this be affecting other members in my family, or my children?
10.  Do you have any useful pamphlets or information I can give to my family to help them better understand what panic disorder is?

Members, please feel free to share other questions you have asked your doctor that have started a positive conversation.

finding confidence

Hello Jaii,

I agree with Sunny, a big part of having a conversation is just listening and asking questions. Definitely try to ask questions and take time to listen to the answer that is given. This will give you the chance to collect your thoughts. Give it a try next time you find yourself in this situation and let us know what happens!

Members, do you have any other helpful tips for Jaii?

Humiliated

Hi Fluke, I'm glad to hear that you made it through your hotel stay and that you really tried to stick it out! You did it! Good for you for reaching out for support from your husband and for using those breathing exercises to get you through.

What have you learned from this experience? What knowledge can you take with you for next time you are in a similar situation?

dealing with anxiety in specific situations

Emma, try to think of previous situations where you were in the same spot you are in right now.

What is making you feel uncertain? Have you felt this way before? What was the outcome? The goal is to hopefully think of previous situations where you had this feeling, and thinks turned out to be fine, this should help relax you and ease your uncertainty.

If this does not work, you can try distracting yourself until your friend does contact you. What are some things you can do until then?

Members, what are your thoughts on this situation?
