fear of flying and dying

Karla,   It is important to recognize that these thoughts are just obsessive thoughts.  Attempts to hold back your disturbing thoughts will actually make it seem more important.  As Breanne had suggested earlier, try challenging your anxious thoughts with some of these questions:   1. Is it "true"?
2. How do I know it’s true?
3. Is it 100% true? (remember something that is 75% or 99% true is
    not 100% true)
4. What's the evidence for it being true?
5. What’s the evidence against it being true?
6. Has it ever happened before?
7. What's different now?
8. If it were true, how bad would it really be?
9. What's the worst thing that could happen?
10. If the worst thing happened, how bad would it really be?   For additional support, contact your physician, perhaps for a referral to a therapist.  There are many options available to help you overcome this.   Members, any strategies you have found helpful in challenging your fears?   Karen, Health Educator

It's exhausting

Drielly,

Have you tried relaxation techniques before?  Check out the posts on Mod's corner for full steps to deep breathing and muscle relaxation techniques.  It may help bring calmness in panic attack situations and when exhausted.  Also, look over sessions 2 and 3 again to help you recognize and challenge the anxious thoughts.     Karen, Health Educator

fear of flying and dying

CrabbyRoad,   Thanks for sharing your story, glad to hear therapy from your psychiatrist and your faith has helped you conquer your fears.    Karla,  I strongly encourage you to also seek help from a mental health professional who can help you with overcoming fears of flying and death.  Also speak to your doctor about treatment with mediction; many people with anxiety, panic disorders, or depression have found antidepressants helpful.      Karen, Health Educator

New Member - Anxiety in morning

WQ,   Welcome to our wonderful support community!    Difficulty breathing and rapid heart beat are common panic attack symptoms.  Have you tried relaxation techniques before bed and as soon as you open your eyes?  Something like deep breathing could be helpful to you.  Getting into the calmest state before bed may keep your anxiety from rebounding in the morning.  It may take a few tries before yourbody gets into the habit of being calm.  Be sure to also use the program.  Session 2 and 3 will teach you to recognize and challenge your thoughts.   How long have you been on your anxiety medications?  In general, most medications take time to build a therapeutic level in your system and as it does, the effect it produces becomes more pronounced and stable.  Perhaps you can speak with your doctor about changing the dosage or medication if you have not been experiencing any benefits for awhile.    Hope that helps.   Karen, Health Educator

New to the site not new to anxiety

Chris,   Welcome to our wonderful online support community!  Good to hear you had a supportive friend to get outside your home... how did the appointment go with the new doctor?    Many people find relaxation techniques like deep breathing and muscle relaxation helpful in stressful and panic situations.    For deep breathing:   1) Take a slow deep breath in through your nose to the slow count of five. Push your tummy out at the same time.

2) Slowly breathe out through your mouth to the count of 7.

3) Repeat this 3 times, as you feel yourself relaxing and the stress dropping away.   Hope this helps.  Members what are some of your favorite stress relievers?
