GETTING STARTED QUITTING AGAIN

Dunedad, I look forward to 'seeing' you around the group.  I have only been here for a week and it has been very helpful.

Breather, I have heard little bits about that book.  Can you read it after you have already quit?  Or is it more intended for people who are thinking about quitting?

Cheers

I?m Just Wondering....

Peteg,

The main reason I quit is because my husband and I want to start a family in the next few years.  I really cannot imagine being pregnant and smoking and I would rather be over the cravings, crankiness, withdrawals, etc before I get pregnant.

In addition, I despise how all the great apartments and places for rent are designated for non-smokers only (regardless if I promise to smoke outside).  I am sad that my car has a cigarette burn on the seat.  I am embarrassed by the yellow fingertips and stains on my teeth.  I am tired of being lectured about smoking from non-smokers.  I hate masking the smoke with perfume and sprays.  I hate the taste when I lit the cigarette the wrong way.  It is gross emptying ashtrays.  I do not miss getting smoke in my eyes.  And, to be completely honest I did not even enjoy smoking.  I would be having a smoke thinking about how much I need a smoke.  How ridiculous is that?

Cheers,
Alice

Interesting ???

Charm,
It definitely could be a result of quitting smoking.  Quitting smoking improves the blood supply to the skin, which can promote a more natural healthy appearance.  Complexion may also get better as enlarged pores reduce in size and overall elasticity of the skin improves.  Here’s to being healthier and looking healthier!

Advice Needed

So, I made it through hell week and thought it went quite well.  I felt energized, motivated and unbeatable.  But, day 9 and 10 have been tough.  I am really struggling to remain positive and remain focused on my goals.  I don't want to start smoking again.  Its disgusting and I enjoy this new healthy me. I just am having a hard time coping with stress.  To release steam, I have been running, running, and running.  Except the exercise is exhausting me and I worry that if I push myself too hard I will just end up injurying myself.

Does anyone have advice on some healthy coping mechanisms?  My house is spotless, my running shoes are out of retirement, and the pages of my text books have been frantically turning.  Yet, I still feel anxious and stressed out.  Help.

A Time of Mourning

Thanks for the thoughtful insight

Peteg, I really like what you said about how your old self was a 'fake' (the smoking part).  The more I thought about this the more I realized how true it is.  I look forward to the reunion with my 'real' self.  Thanks.

Lolly, I a glad that I will return to my former strength.  I look forward to it immensly.  I like the idea of a goodbye letter.

Jim, I really want to have a positive attitude and feel giddy about every moment.  To be honest, its exhausting to "bitch and moan and mourn."  I have been reading the Secret and it has helped a bit.  Do you have any advice on how to shift to a more positive outlook?

Cheers

Self-Discovery and Surviving Heck Week

On Thursday, my husband and I took a 7 hour trip to a conference for school/work.  During this trip, I discovered new things about myself, my addiction and about change.  I realized that smoking was used as a tool to pass the boredom on long trips trapped in a car.  Without the smoke, I listened to interesting inner dialogues and engaged in unexpected philosophical debates with my husband.  I acknowledged that I used smoking at conferences as a way to avoid public settings and to cope with my own insecurities.  Without the smoke, I became aware of how brave I am and how fulfilling social interactions can be.  I noticed that I enjoyed smoking after a meal at a restaurant with friends.  Without the smoke, I realized that I enjoy drinking green tea, warm restaurants, and conversation with cherished friends.  I learned that I gained 1-2 pounds on long business trips because the only exercise I would get would be from the hotel room to the outside for a cigarette.  Without the smoke, I experienced how peaceful a city can be at 6:00am on a morning jog and that the normal 1-2 pound gain is preventable.  Above all, I became aware that there is an important distinction between who I thought I was (a smoker) and who I truly am.  I have changed in a two short weeks and I look forward to a new future of unexpected, yet welcomed, discoveries.
I have survived heck week (kicking and screaming) and look forward too many more smoke free days.
